Caran d’Ache make some fantastic looking pens, but the problem I have with them is that they’re all too thin. Unfortunately, the pens in the RNX.316 Collection are no exception. But, if a thin, all metal pen is what you’re looking for then you definitely need to take a peek at these.

The Caran d’Ache RNX.316 Collection is almost more marketing than anything else. If it didn’t have a black nib I would have completely overlooked it. The name “RNX.316″ stands for Round aNd heXagonal while the 316 denotes the type of steel the pen is made from: 316L. The pens come in either a steel finish or a black, PVD ceramic coated finish. You can get either finish as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint, or mechanical pencil.

One somewhat interesting feature of the fountain pen is the cartridge changing process: to remove the cartridge you twist a knob at the end of the pen to push the section away and out of the pen body. Then remove and insert a new cartridge and reverse the process to attach the section. This seems like a somewhat more elegant, albeit convoluted process than just unscrewing the section.

I simply like the look of the pen and nib. The fountain pen only comes in Fine, Medium, and Broad widths and starts around $780.
