Still lacking class, but less of a “toy” at least

The Noodler’s Ahab is already available in 11 different colors, none of which make me consider it a serious fountain pen. I realize it’s a cheap fountain pen meant to have fun and introduce people to flexible nibs but they just look like toys to me. I’d never consider taking any of their current colors out in public, and would never use it in a professional setting. Noodler’s is releasing six new colors which definitely improves the look but they still lack any kind of class.

Noodlers ahab fountain pen 7 new colorsThankfully all of the six new colors are transparent which makes them more acceptable. I am much less hesitant to buy one of these not only for myself, but as a gift for someone else. I think these new colors will be a much bigger hit than the previous 11. They’ll still cost $20 and should be available soon. Isellpens is offering to put people on a waiting list to be notified when they can pre-order the pen. You can contact Isellpens at pen-king2@cox.net to be placed on the waiting list.

@FPGeeks does this look like a toy? Once upon a time f[ountain] p[en]s didn't have to [be] expensive to be good and useful. http://t.co/RYZ6XhCT

Could you elaborate as to what is toy-like about the Ahab? Although I don't necessarily object to your characterization, I just don't get what characteristics make it seem like a toy.

      You bet.

Like I said in the headline, I actually think the new colors are fairly acceptable as they're more of a demonstrator, just in bright colors. The first batch of Ahab pens look like toys to me because they remind me of that little booth at the fair where you got to squirt bright colored paint on the spinning disc to create a trippy, swirly, tie-die mess. That's all.

  3. Neither cost nor usefulness speak to a pen's "toy" appearance. The fact that it looks like Noodler's melted down a yo-yo collection to make pens – that says it all. An Ahab is not a pen I would take to a meeting, but if it's as fun to write with as the appearance would have me believe, I'd happily use it with abandon in my the privacy of my cubicle.

    Class?! Really?

That headline insulted me immediately – simply because I "like" the Ahab for using Noodler's BSB and other questionable inks. Inks I'm a bit afraid to use in my other more expensive pens.

The headline immediately said to me you feel I have no class because I like and use the pen. And I would use it in public. Why not? I use my Cool Blue Starwalker in public. Both attract attention.

I feel that it's like saying driving a Lexus SUV to the camping store exhibits less class than driving a Range Rover to the store. Most of the public doesn't own either.

So, which affordable (sub $150) pens do you feel have "class"?

After this if I continue to read your blog and I listen to your podcast(s) – I'll have to do so with a "Fox News" filter in place from now on.

    Wow!

  5. Stuart says:

Dan, you should stop worrying about what other people think. The pen you use won't change whether or not you have class.

Have fun and use whatever pen you want. You can still have class even if you use a pen that's pink.
