The clear demonstrator version of the Ahab has been available for some time now. But, Noodler’s is about to release a whole new batch in stunning colors. The new Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a renewable resource. It uses a sliding piston mechanism to fill the pen and features a steel nib that provides flexible fun for everyone. The nib is really why this pen is so popular. Well, that and its’ price. Get yours in the coming weeks for around $20. Be sure to check out Noodler’s site for more pictures.

I had no idea the demonstrator was already available. This would interest me mainly as a sketching pen – no doubt as to what ink it has inside.

What are the dimesions of this pen – I ask because the 2 noodlers pens I have are both rather slim for my hand. Is this one as fat as it looks or just short. I would also like to know if it can take old 14Kt nibs like the other models as for drawing big old irridium stubs suit my style.

Ernest, here are the specs for the Ahab:

      Overall Weight: 18g (0.63oz)

      Cap Weight: 6g (0.21oz)

      Body Weight:12g (0.42oz)

      Overall Length (capped): 139mm (5.47in)

      Overall Length (posted): 170mm (6.7in)

      Body Length: 128mm (5.04in)

      Cap Length: 60mm (2.36in)

Cap Diameter (no clip): 15mm (0.59in)

Cap Diameter (with clip): 20mm (0.79in)

      Body Diameter: 14mm (0.55in)

      Nib Length: 20mm (0.79in)

With a body diameter of 14mm (0.55in) it's a bit larger than the Pelikan M800 and Sailor 1911 (both measure 0.53in), the same width of a modern Aurora 88, just a hair smaller than the Pelikan M1000 (0.56in), and a bit smaller than the Montblanc 149 (0.59in). So it's a fairly large pen. Click the link below to compare all the dimension of the Ahab to those pens I mentioned.

I'm not sure about it being able to use old 14Kt nibs. We may have one of these in to review soon.
