Most of the time Montblanc does a good job of paying tribute to a person through a well designed pen. Other times they create a pen with significance and visual appeal that’s clearly a step above everything else. I would have to say the new Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock Limited Edition fountain pen is one of those pens.
Based on the 146 size Meisterstück Le Grand, the Alfred Hitchcock Limited Edition will come in two versions: the Limited Edition 3000 and the Limited Edition 80. The LE 3000 is limited to 3000 fountain pens and 3000 rollerballs while the LE 80 is limited to 80 fountain pens only. I’m glad to see they’re not making any rollerballs of the Limited Edition 80.
The styling of these pens draw primarily from 3 films: The Rope (1948), Vertigo (1958), and Psycho (1960). The 18k solid gold, rhodium plated nib features the iconic self-portrait sketch. The cap and body is made from a textured lacquer that represents the vertigo effect felt by the main character of Vertigo as he raced up a set of stairs. And who can forget that scene in Psycho with that knife? It’s immediately recognizable and acts as the clip for the pen.
The Limited Edition 3000 comes with .925 sterling silver hardware with engravings of notes around the cap band that would have identified the original film reel of Psycho. The cone also features 53 hatch marks symbolising every movie that Hitchcock directed during his impressive career spanning nearly six decades. The fountain pen will retail for $3,745 and the rollerball for $3,195.

The Limited Edition 80 goes even further and, in my opinion, is the only version Montblanc should have made. The cap and body feature red streaks symbolizing the blood from the murder victims. The knife clip remains but includes four diamonds and 18k white gold hardware. The rope sinuously wrapped around the fountain penʼs cap and barrel rings and cone, refers to the murder weapon in The Rope. The cap rings of the Limited Edition 80 are encircled by a stylised roll of celluloid film while the 53 hatch marks on the cone from the Limited Edition 3000 have been moved to the section on the Limited Edition 80. Price for the Limited Edition 80 is available upon request and both pens will be available in January.

Lovely pens. Now if only I had several thousand dollars to spare.
The Limited Edition 80 is a real looker—well done, Montblanc!
I am very impressed with the amount of thought that MB put into this pen, without making the special design features *too* obvious (eg. I didn't notice the knife clip until I read the article). As Julie said, I wish I had the cash to afford one!
