One of Pilot’s newest pens, based on the 845, is made from Taxus Cuspidata or Japanese Yew. The origin of the name of the tree, “Ichii,” is from a story told concerning the Heiji Emperor. About 800 years ago, when the Emperor was presented with a scepterade of this wood at his coronation, he greatly appreciated its superior quality. The wood so out-shined other woods in use at the time that the Emperor gave the tree the name “Ichii,” after the official bureaucratic status called “Sho-ichii.”
The Pilot Ichii Wood fountain pen features an 18k solid gold nib and utilizes the CON-70 style converter. It’s approximately 16mm in diameter and 147mm long making it similar to the size of the Pelikan M1000, i.e., a large pen.
Shown below is the pen pouch included with the Pilot Ichii fountain pen. It’s made from lacquered deerskin from Inden-ya, which claims to have been in this business for 13 generations. More information about the deerskin lacquering process can be found here.
