The Water Dragon. Maki-e over ebonite. There was no description available for this pen but with pictures like that, do you really need one? $6000.

UPDATE 5/29: Nakaya sent me a description for this pen after I mentioned there wasn’t one on their website. Enjoy.

This pen was produced in connection with the year of Dragon, 2012.
A waterfall is drawn by Keshi-gin technique with new green urushi by Tame-sukashi.
Ascending Dragon is expressed on it by Gold urushi.
Rocks are expressed by Gin-yuji technique and a foaming waterfall is expressed by palladium powder.

Cigar model, Long size.

The Fujin and the Raijin. (A wind god and the thunder god.) The base for this pen is a long cigar made of ebonite with a diameter of 17mm. The taka-maki-e technique is used here starting with a  gold or silver base to which red and green urushi is layered. The entire pen is then polished to a brilliant shine. $10,000

Very beautiful as art objects, but probably these pens are more for the display case than to be used. And a golden pen I can appreciate does not come by too often.
But these Japanese gods scare the livin’ daylights out of you. Man, are these guys ugly.

    And they are cartridge converters…

Yes, Marco, I agree it seems a lot of money for a cartridge converter. But personally, I’m willing to forgive them because they are works of art.

Agreed. I bet you the majority of these pens (and their numbers will probably be very limited anyway) will never be inked at all. I still think that’s a waste, but since I don’t have to bother with that buying decision… okay.

Beautiful – They must take hundreds of hours to create. I’d love to go to Japan and see the craftsmen/women making them.

Jack, you’re not allowed to go to Japan without me, ok? And I know Eric would love to go. We’d also have to bring our film crew to document the trip.

Of course! Would make a great documentary! Let’s book the flights now? I’d go via the US, of course.
