The Diamond IROC 850 has come a long way from the test sample we saw a few weeks ago. The image on the left shows the results of the first test of line cutting and is much different than what I thought it was going to be. The other two images are test samples with the titanium PVD coating. The middle image is the most recent update released very early this morning. Its polished surface looks absolutely amazing and I’m now voting for this one to make it into production. Also, just a quick note, if the shape of the piston knob in the left image is any indication, it looks like the cap will post directly on it just like the 540. How do you feel about that?

It appears that TWSBI will switching the vac ink bottle design to a completely injection molded unit. There are several pieces to it, which we already knew, and the cap will attach to the Diamond ink bottle making it slightly more useful. Anyone excited for this?

Okay, the polished version is changing my mind about it. I like that quite a bit.

Unless there’s a way to lock the piston, posting to the piston is a total FAIL. I can’t believe TWSBI would make the same mistake twice!

The VAC bottle is interesting. I wonder how much ink it holds? I hope it holds LESS than the TSA maximum for carry-on fluids (it is amazing TSA hasn’t banned fountain pens as deadly weapons yet). In-fact I wish it would hold less ink, maybe only 10ml or so. That would be enough for several fills when traveling, plus the option to carry-on more than one bottle of ink (different colors of-course).

TWSBI vac ink bottle designThis isn’t a final design but it should give you a decent idea.

Is the posting a big deal, I wonder? I’d have thought this, being metal, would be a pretty heavy pen – surely the cap would make it pretty top heavy (assuming the proportions are similar to the 530/540).

I only post mini-pens, so maybe I’m not giving it enough consideration…

I don’t lend much “weight” to posting a metal pen. That, in my opinion would make the pen too top heavy. I have multiple metal pens and do not post any of them for this reason. Hopefully TWSBI does a good enough job of balancing out the pen so that we do not have to consider posting this Beautiful looking pen!

I prefer to post my pens and I have at least 1 all metal pen that the balance and feel is great posted or not. I have both the TWSBI 540 and 700 and my only complaint on both especially the 540 is the way it post and feels when posted, if on both models the cap just came down a little more deeper onto the body when posted I suspect that would be a big improvement, at the very least help eliminate some of the top heaviness.
That said both have quickly become 2 of my favorite pens even though they are the only 2 I use almost exclusively unposted.
The 850 definitely has my interest as well, any idea on if it will have the smaller nib of the 540 or the larger nib found on the 700?

No word on what nib size will be in the 850, but I sincerely hope it’s the #6.

Here, Here, Let’s hope that Speedy is watching this as I also am hoping for the #6 nib! That Micarta with the #6 is one sweet writing machine with a Bold nib.

My Bexley Corona posts on the piston knob, and it works for me.

I think this pen will post more securely than the 540. If it does (I think it will go all the way down on the piston knob) and if the balance is right with the pen posted, I will be more than happy with the pen.

Looking at that cap, I would be shocked if the pen gets a #6 nib. By the same token, it looks like the cap might not be finished on the inside in the photos, just on the outside. It’s just a mock up, right?
