This week’s denizen of the Daily Carry is Lisa Miyako. If that name doesn’t ring a bell then maybe you’ll recognize her screen name: ethernautrix. She’s very active in many of the fountain pen circles found both online and off. She brings a witty, subtle sarcastic tone to the conversation that keeps things lively and fun. She’s an advocate of Nakaya fountain pens and after seeing her daily carry, I can understand why. Sit back, attach the bib, and let the drooling commence!

201207 FPGeeks Daily Carry 1Here’s something we’ve not seen before. Lisa actually carries these inks and a syringe. Since she describes it better than I ever could, I’ll just let her tell us what she carries:

I think that I keep the same inks in the same pens, but a moment’s pause reminds me that I tend to switch inks out more frequently than I realize, but they’re usually the same inks, just for different pens (usually cos of the nib variable), to wit: Noodler’s Black and Walnut and the elusive exclusive Schreibtinte Braun. I like to keep one red in rotation, which is the Platinum Mix Free SPSY. And then sometimes I’ll throw in one more ink, either Sailor Rikyu Cha or Sailor Blue-Black or a green…. Today, though, because I have only five pens inked, the line-up is two blacks, two browns, and the one red. Unless you count the Pilot Parallel, in which case it’s three browns.

201207 FPGeeks Daily Carry 3 In the photo above are two Nakayas in Quiver two-pen holders. Each one is meant to carry two, but as you can see, she uses them as singles. They’are attached to a Markings by C.R. Gibson notebook (a Moleskine lookalike). The three-pen case is a Fiocchi Italy three-slot pen case with a wide loop that snaps over a belt or other strap. Serving as a back drop are two Franklin-Christoph Lucky 13 Penvelopes, one in boot brown, the other in black.

  2. Nakaya Neo-standard (aka tamenuri) Piccolo Cigar (unpolished shu)
  3. Nakaya Mini Decapod (heki tamenuri)
  4. Montblanc 100-Year Historical
  5. Franklin-Christoph #65 Desk Pen

The Daily Carry portrait. Believe it or not, missing from this picture of Lisa’s daily carry pens is a Montblanc Agatha Christie ballpoint! These are all the same pens as above, just in a different order.

  5. Montblanc 100-Year

201207 FPGeeks Daily Carry 5While not part of Lisa’s daily carry, the penvelopes do tag along every now and then. Identifying all the pens in these two cases could be a game in and of itself. Anyone care to participate?

201207 FPGeeks Daily Carry 6The usual roster of benchwarmers next to a four-slot pen case that Lisa has jerryrigged with safety pins to wear pinned to the waistband of her jeans but also used with a strap to wear over the shoulder. This setup debuted at the LA Pen Show a few months ago to massive fanfare and resulted in several licensing deals between Lisa and several pen case manufacturers (not really, but we can pretend, right?).

Daily Carry Please Note

Lisa Miyako is a figment of Lisa Miyako’s imagination. They, we… both enjoy using fountain pens, particularly Nakaya, particularly Nakaya’s ruthenium-plated nibs (the full range, from F to M). Ink of choice is Noodler’s Black, with Noodler’s Old Manhattan Black so close behind that it’s practically a tie. But that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Efforts to pigeonhole Lisa Miyako’s pen and ink tastes tend to meet with obstacles which might explain why Lisa Miyako doesn’t collect pens: It is difficult to cateogorize je ne sais quoi. Having said that, Lisa Miyako admires pen people whose collections show a singularity of focus and understands why some people don’t want to ink and use some of their pens.

Lisa Miyako and her imagination apologize for writing this in the third person. It was awkward for me, too.

One of the pens has the wrong “note” assigned to it.

  • pelahale

    Not so brown-green is it.

  • etoyocrebmos

If I was a Syracuse football fan, I might have noticed a mistake faster. However, I love seeing all those Nakaya pens!

  • mjcong

<3 lisa's handwriting.. ok so this has nothing to do with the "wrong" pen

    • ethernautrix

      Thanks, mjcong!

Hey Lisa…this post needs moar Parker 51. ;-)

    • ethernautrix

The one P51 I have is more memento than pen. It’s the one Ryan Roossinck surprised me with (he just sent it to me out of the blue) to try, and then I couldn’t send it back (because I liked it so much), so I sent him a bunch of pens so I could keep the P51, and then I broke it (“destroyed” is probably more accurate; destroyed by accident, then scientific misstep – saga in the FPN archives). The power of Pen Posse fixed the pen, so it is very dear to me. :-)

      • Daniel Ritter

Arcing was involved, if I recall; as well as the word “airborne”.

      • Stiggy Ray Cyrus

        C’mon Lisa, I figured that you would’ve guessed who I was! (It’s Ryan,by the way.) I couldn’t resist giving you a hard time. :-)

        • ethernautrix

I had no idea! I have another case, you know… but I was in a rush when I grabbed my pens and camera and chased the dog that ate my homework, you know how it is when the sun is in your eyes….
          :-)

  • ianmedium

Oh my, oh my oh my, oh my! LIsa, what a stunningly varied and beautiful collection you have! There is not one pen there that is not 100% covetable. You have excellent taste. Wonderful, simply wonderful!

    • Maja

an enthusiastic +1 from me! Now….can you please ID the pens in the two penvelopes, Lisa?
      TIA
      ~Maja

      • http://fpgeeks.com/ Dan Smith

Oh, Maja, I’m sure you wouldn’t have a problem identifying all those pens! ;-)

      • ethernautrix

Hi, Maja. Okay… let’s see, boot brown case first (L-R):
Waterman 200, Waterman Patrician pencil, Waterman Lady Patricia (beautifully clear!), Nakaya Piccolo Cigar (solid black), Nakaya Piccolo Writer (heki tamenuri), Nakaya Negoro, Danitrio Komori, Danitrio Fellowship, Montblanc Hemingway, Montblanc Agatha Christie ballpoint, Montblanc Semiramis, Montblanc StarWalker, and Pelikan Toledo.

        Black case (L-R):
Sheaffer Connaisseur ballpoint, Parker Duofold Centennial, matching ballpoint, Sailor 1911, Sheaffer Flat-Top, TWSBI Micarta, Aurora Optima, Marlen Journal, Franklin-Christoph IPO Maki-e, Franklin-Christoph 25 Eclipse, Montblanc Scenium rollerball, and Pelikan M205. :-)

        • http://fpgeeks.com/ Dan Smith

Should I just add this info to the post?

          • ethernautrix

Maybe you could add a pen randomly to a sentence (wait, are there 25 sentences? I suppose the Parker Duofold could be a set) and see if anyone notices.

Or, hey! Do a match game, list the pens randomly next to the photo and see if anyone can match them all!
Or, actually, my first answer, yeah, sure, that would be great!
            Thanks, Dan.

  • Jon Szanto

    Show off.

That my “subtly sarcastic” comment for the fine Ms. Miyako… ;)

  • RagingDragon

Time to shu away that error. A pen which not at all standard, yet is music to my ears.

    Sometimes a cigar is not a cigar…

    • ethernautrix

      Sometimes…

      a cigar…

      is a Nakaya Piccolo.

      No wonder it’s confusing. :-)

  • S. Franklin

Some of us embellish our daily carry, but this is a woman who carries an FP along on every bike ride…. So in her case I believe she might daily carry most of these. Fine taste, I must say!

  • S. Franklin

Hey, this is the woman who takes a fountain pen on a bike ride “just in case” – so I believe her daily carry list which most of us embellish a little for “daily” carry. Nice collection there Lisa !

    • ethernautrix

A fountain pen” -?! [Emphasis added.] FIVE fountain pens! For a bike ride? Yeah, five. (Laughs.) That’s what the rack bag is for — notebook and pens and snacks.

It’s when I go jogging that I carry only one fountain pen. :-)

(I hope emphasis was added. The “A” should be bold. Bolded? In bold.)
