If I had $15k to drop on a fountain pen I’m not sure if I’d pick this one or the Pelikan Ocean Mystery from the Maki-e Unique Collection that’s based on the M1000. They’re both bright orange, which I love, but ultimately I think dragons trump marine life. I’d be happy with both, honestly, and since we’re playing make believe (because when will I ever have $15k for a fountain pen?!) lets just say I end up with both pens. There, problem solved.
Back in reality, the Nakaya Gold Dragon starts life as a long cigar model made from ebonite and employs the Taka-Maki-e technique in a gold base over an Arai-shu surface. Taka-Maki-e is a technique used to create a raised design on the pen and give it a much more dimensional look and feel. Arai-shu basically means washed-out or faded red. As with all Nakaya fountain pens of this caliber, these are made on a per order basis and will take several months to complete. I think the wait would be worth it.
