When Eric asked me to write about my passion I said sure. But when I actually sat down to write about it, I really had to give it some thought. There are things that I enjoy and love: reading, fountain pens, writing in my journal, art, kayaking. But what am I really passionate about?

My animals! We currently have two dogs. Kota, 9, and Jewlz, 7. They are Akitas and are our second pair. We do not breed them, just love them. Most people don’t realize that I was a cat person before entering the Akita era.

Kota

Kota

My cat, Little Girl, lived about 2 years into the Akita era before cancer took her at the age of sixteen. I was 17 when she was born and she moved with me through college and three states. She was my best friend. She is one of the reasons why, when George decided that he wanted a dog, I said, “Sure, but I pick the breed.

Jewlz

Jewlz

Akitas are very catlike in many respects. They are self cleaning and independent, but they are dogs. Kota is my best friend, after George, and he and Jewlz are always happy to see me when I get home. No matter how bad my day, they always make me smile.

Anyway, I am a lifelong animal advocate and proponent of spay/neuter programs. I also believe that little things like brushing teeth and better food can save lots of money on vet bills, long term.

Want to get me talking? Ask me about my fur babies.

Post a picture of dogs and I am weak at the knees. I have not been able to have one of my own for years due to the nature of my life and I really miss having one, one of the many reasons I am returning to the UK is that I can have a dog again! I love your two, they look like they are pure love! Do you trim them in the summer or do they keep fairly cool even with thicker coats, I know some dogs do.

Hey Ian! When you get back to the UK, get two dogs. Name one Alfred and the other Hitchcock =) Just a thought…

Eric! I was thinking more along the lines of three dogs, one Mont, one Blanc and the other Parker!! Hope all is well with you Eric, really looking forward to seeing the DC show stuff with you, the Doc, Brian, Brian and Greg.. Hmm sounds like a 70′s prog rock group!!

Nope no trimming – Akitas have a double coat which provides insulation to protect them from both the heat and the cold. But they are definitely stay in the house with the A/C types. They are spoiled!

That’s great, Julie! My little guy of 16 years passed about 2 months ago. We’re torn as to whether or not we get another. Your photos are swaying me!

Aww I love this piece! We need more animal advocates! Your Akitas are absolutely stunning. This isn’t random at all… I mean, I blog about cats and stationery, right? I assumed there were other fountain pen lovers who loved their pets too. It’s only natural. Hehehe. Thank you for sharing!

I love this post! Your Akitas are really cute. Here we have a Pom, he’s like an oversized plush toy (he’s bigger than other Poms I’ve seen).

This is exactly what I expected when I saw the title of the post. And I love Kota’s face mask!

Very cute pups! I should post a pic of my pups! We have 7 dogs; one Toy Poodle, and six malteepoos. Very playful, but what an upkeep!

      wow – that’s not pups that’s a pack!

      • http://www.facebook.com/will.platt.39 Will Platt

        yup :)

  • Maja

Beautiful dogs, Julie! (I’m a big softie when it comes to dogs :) Did you get Kota and Jewlz as pups or were they adopted (together or separately)? Whatever the case, thanks for sharing with us, and also for mentioning the spay/neuter program!

Hi Maja – we got Kota as a pup of 8 weeks. When our previous old lady, KiKi, passed in Dec of 2004 we were going to wait and then our groomer told us about a 9 mo old girl pup that she wanted to find a new home for. We call her our “semi-rescue” she was kennel kept until she was 6 months old and then in a home with an adult male Akita, 5 chihuahuas, 2 other dogs, a 5 year old child and a couple in the midst of a nasty divorce. She definitely had some trust issues when we got her. But she is the sweetest dog you will ever meet, but very cautious with new people.

      • Maja

Thanks for the quick reply, Julie. I love happy endings and yes, I definitely agree Jewlz was a ‘rescue’ dog. Poor girl :( What lucky dogs Kota and Jewlz are now, though :) Wishing you many more happy years together!

I am a fan of dogs and also Akita’s, even though I am not able to adopt a dog due to our life style. Me and my husband are not at home during the day. But we have two cats. Patik (4,5 yo British Shorthair) and Torik (3 yo stray cat) and I know that feeling on capacity of talking of them all day long. You can see them here

Both cats and dogs are great spirits and we have too much to learn from them. I am really glad that I have read about your passion.

    Cheers,
