I’m sure the news of Pelikan re-releasing a brown tortoise M800 fountain pen will excite many of you. It’s not the white tortoise M800 I was so hoping for but it should do a better job of keeping me satisfied than the M600 white tortoise has. I guess size really does matter.
Around early March several retailers, including the well known Nibs.com, and even Pelikan’s UK distributor website spilled the beans on this upcoming pen. It didn’t last long as Pelikan promptly asked them to remove all their published information. We know what that’s like.
At the time, expected release was to be in September at an estimated $650 price point. But, both of those items could change dramatically. It will not be a limited edition, although it will most likely be a limited production fountain pen.
Pelikan has made a brown tortoise M800 before. According to Rick Propas:
They made them in 1987, when the M800 was first introduced. They did not sell well. They have not made any more because of that. If you can believe it, my Pelikan sources tell me that they were closed out at the Pelikan factory for 300DM! Ain’t that a killer.
In good shape a set, and that’s what they came as, can fetch upwards of $2000.00.
At the going rate for an original, I’d be more than happy to pay $650 for a modern version.
