FPGeeks - find new pen

The Find Your Next Pen widget is highlighted above in blue and can be found in the right sidebar of the website.

FPGeeks has been up and running under our current goal to centralize new pen announcements for just over a year now. We’ve published almost 700 articles, at least a quarter of those being new pen releases, with no intention of slowing down anytime soon. While it’s great to have all that information in one place, it doesn’t do much good if you can’t find it.

The Find Your Next Pen widget in the right sidebar of the website (highlighted in blue in the image to the left) is our solution to this problem.

The widget will allow you to find any post that we consider to be a new product announcement, including Hands-on and Awesome Reviews.

You will be able to make multiple selections in each category to find pens based on Brand, Filling System, Nib Material, and Price Class. And, yes, we will be updating the names for each price class to include the price range they cover.

The only downside I see to this solution is that it refreshes the page after you hit “Submit”. We’re working on developing a page using jquery that will eliminate the need to refresh the page after you’ve made your selection and will bring in the matching posts using some cool animations. But that’s gonna take a while.

What we’d like for you to do is give us your thoughts. Does this widget suck so bad in its current form that we should just remove it from the site? Is it so good that you’re finally able to sleep through the night knowing you can easily find the pen of your dreams?

Keep in mind that the addition of more categories will be limited. Things like ‘color’ or ‘nib size’ just won’t work well. But, something like a check-box for ‘demonstrator’ may be useful.

Now go play with it and report back here with any bugs, criticisms, or praises.

You guys must have read my mind.
Idea is great. Execution is obviously very difficult.
Maybe pull it down and get an affiliate involved (nudge wink tweak)

      You do pro bono work?

I was hinting at pointing users toward a pen merchant with their results. Any pro bono programming out of me would still be unconscionably overpriced.

Thanks for this new tool Dan, I don’t really need something like this but I am sure many others would find it very useful! ^_^

It’s a great idea. I’m a little confused because it doesn’t seem to “narrow choices down” based on your first choice. Eg I tried Platinum first, but it didn’t reduce to relevant choices on Filling then nib types… So I could choose options that resulted in the message “No Results Found”. A better option would be to provide choices in a hierarchy starting with the first choice etc. or as a fall back, to only let people choose one of Brand or Nib Type or Filling Mechanism or whatever.

Agreed. The widget is rather limited at this point and would be much more helpful if the number of items next to each category updated themselves after a taxonomy (Brand, Nib Material, Filling Sytem, Price) was selected.

    Meh…

Thank you for taking the time to construct such a well thought out, constructive comment. Your detailed feedback about what you like and don’t like will help us tailor this feature to your needs in the future.

I think this is a great start and will really make it easier to find articles on this site! There have been many times were I’ve been looking for something on here, and this would have been great. Or course, as it’s more developed, it would be nice if there was a filter of sorts, as Newjelan said. But I also understand that it’s difficult to do, and I certainly wouldn’t know where even to begin. But once something like that is working, I think it’ll be great and really help people. Especially people still learning about fountain pens. Hopefully there’s a reader out there who is very technologically savvy. Thank you guys for being so passionate about this site that you’re trying to do everything you can to make it the best!

good idea, keep at it! suggestions: search by color, i.e. red, blue, etc.; also: search by materials or finish, i.e. celluloid, maki-e, etc.

Just wondering if this works on a mobile platform? Do I just need to switch from mobile to full sit view? Why am I asking? I’ll just go and try it (doh!)
