From Brent Acuff:
Fountain Pen Geeks and the Pen Community,
First off, let me say what a wonderful podcast this is. I have been a faithful listener since episode one, and your podcasts are always informative and very entertaining. More than once, my pocketbook has been impacted by information and/or reviews on your podcast.
But I write to you today with a favor to ask. I have recently received a huge amount of support from the pen and writing community. I was hoping you could help me share my thanks with everyone.
For the last two years, I have sponsored a group of middle school students during the month long writing competition, NaNoWriMo. The goal of the competition is to write a novel in just 30 days. Each student sets a word count goal, and writes everyday to try and meet their goal. If they are successful, Amazon’s book imprint, CreateSpace, will print five copies of the books for the student, for free.
Last year I was able to get some support from different businesses, which sent writing supplies to hand out to my students. Companies such as Field Notes, Zebra Pens, Staedler, Moleskine, and Karen from Exaclair.com provided journals, pens, and pencils which the students were excited to receive.
For this year’s competition the writing community has come through once more, and in ways I never thought would happen. On a whim, I contacted some fountain pen makers to see if they would be willing to help sponsor these young writers, and the response has been overwhelming. I have received 24 fountain pens, a very nice Retro 51 Tornado rollerball, and 2 Tombow Airpress ballpoints to give out as prizes to the students.
I am an avid fountain pen collector myself, and my students always enjoy looking at my “special pens.” And I have enjoyed watching their surprise and delight at each new pen I display for them to win. I’m excited to get these pens in their hands.
So if you would allow me to thank these fine companies so that all of your listeners can know what wonderful people we have supporting us and the future fountain pen users, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks go out to:
Moleskine for 2 boxes of journals and pens (a 2nd year sponsor);
Doane Paper for a box of journals;
Zebra Pens for a BIG box of pens (2nd year sponsor);
Exaclair for the Clairfontaine journals (2nd year sponsor);
Pilot Pens for an assortment of pens;
TWSBI for a Diamond 540!!! (the kids are drooling over this one);
Lamy for a Green Apple Safari;
Kaweco for 3 Ice Sports;
Pelikan for 5 Script Fountain Pens;
Pelle Journals;
Pendemonium for a bottle of ink;
Goulet Pens for 3 bottles of ink;
Dalys Pen Shop for 8 Rotring Core fountain pens;
Cross for 3 Solo Sports;
Retro 51 for a Tornado rollerball;
Jet Pens for 2 Preppys and a Pelikan;
KUM for 60 pencil sharpeners (I love these pencil sharpeners. They are the only ones I use); and
Tombow for 2 Airpress ball points.This list is long, but I wanted everyone to know how much I appreciate all of these companies for their support. The students are excited about writing, and are gearing up for their November novels.
Now that I’m finished securing prizes for my students, I can set my sights on saving for that Edison Collier in Electric Blue. Wow, what a beautiful pen (and one more way the FPGeeks podcast is hitting me in the pocketbook..).
Thanks for your time and help in getting my appreciation out. Keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Brent Acuff
