Pelikan M101N Lizard fountain penIn 1937, Pelikan launched the first M101N with a global campaign and much success. From the six models in the series which became available throughout the years, the version in tortoiseshell brown is one of the most sought-after vintage pens. At the time, it was only sold outside Germany. As the shape and coloring still appeals to many collectors and lovers of vintage products today, Pelikan now introduces a second Special Edition that takes up the main characteristics of the M101N, this time with a grey lizard skin pattern.

The lizard skin pattern on the barrel and cap is made from cellulose acetate and has a smooth finish. The size is smaller than today‘s standard fountain pens, just like it was back in 1937 and around the same size as the current M400.

The nib is 14c gold and rhodium plated to give the polished, silver colored finish. The trim is palladium plated and the black parts are high-quality resin.

    I didn’t fancy the
previous M101N Tortoise with burgundy/brown cap-top and filler knob. This one,
however, looks utterly handsome. I appreciate their choice of making this in
exactly the same size as the original one but I’m still not sure about whether M400
size will be comfortable for me or not. I guess, I’d have to use it posted all the time.

    A gorgeous pen, nevertheless.

the m400 is larger than some might think…its barrel goes all the way into the cap, so the pen is nicely sized uncapped. it still might be too small

I can use posted M600 sized Pelikans quite comfortably (in fact, even more than M800 and yet I find an M1000 more comfortable than M600 most of times. Weird, ha?)

Do you think girth of M101N or M400 is similar to M600?

        • http://www.facebook.com/will.platt.39 Will Platt

I don’t know. I’ve never held one. But the girth should be the same as a m400.

whoa!!!this is epic for the pen community!

Well that just goes to the top of my wants list…

One final nitpicking I forgot to mention; I would really like to see both of these pens (Tortoise and Lizard) without such a long ink window. I know it’s, again, meant to live up to the originals’ design codes but I believe they both would be much more elegant without that.

I think this is the first Pelikan that I am excited about…and I mean EXCITED!!! Wow!
