Back in July we gave you all the details for a one-of-a-kind event being held by Pelikan to auction off pens from their Maki-e Unique Collection. We even included images, details of the pens, and their starting prices. Today, the first auction begins for pen No. 1, the Snow Crystal. Each auction lasts seven days with a new auction starting every day.

To recap the rules from our previous post:

Anyone can sign up to participate in the auction. When you do, you pick a Pelikan Maki-e Authorized Retailer who will act as your partner after the end of the auction.

You then look through the 12 auctions to decide which one(s) you’d like to bid on. The first auction will start on October 1st and every weekday a new auction starts. Each auction lasts one full week  and always ends at 2PM CEST (Berlin time).

Then you bid. The bidding goes up in increments of 50 Euro. You place your maximum bid and the system will increase your bid automatically, up to your maximum.

If you win you and your retail partner will each receive an email. You send payment and then you’ll receive the pen. Please visit Pelikan’s website for more details about the auction rules.

So, if you’re interested in bidding be sure to sign up, it’s an easy process. And if you’re interested in what the pens sell for, you can keep on eye on Pelikan’s auction site, or just stay tuned into FPGeeks.com where we’ll have the updated information as soon as each auction ends.

My humble opinion is that fountain pens that are less for writing and more for jewelry purposes should be called something else.
These pens have a starting bid of 2,100 Euro, or $2,577.
That’s just simply insane for normal people to even think about.
The same goes for camera gear, I see some leicas out there which have astronomic prices. And whomever gets to own such gear, never even thinks of taking it out to use it to take pictures.
There is a part of me that wants to pay good money to get a quality product, but there’s a limit to my extravagance and it has to be justified by a reciprocal increase in utility with price.
I’m not a believer in paying for the brand name or the bragging rights. Yesterday I was listening to Eric’s interview with Nathan Tardiff and he voiced my opinions quite nicely.
