TWSBI Mini Clear

The TWSBI Mini is finally available! For only $50 you get a piston filling fountain pen with a cap that posts by threading onto the barrel. You have your choice of three cool styles: Classic, Black, or Clear. The steel nib comes in EF, F, M, and B. No stubs yet. You can order them now from TWSBI (just click the image to go to that respective product page) or from your favorite retailer later this week.

So, who’s getting one (or more)?

I’m torn between the black and the black/clear one. I’m actually going to continue to wait a bit and hope for an italic, though.

Yay. Ordered the black and the demonstrator. Does that black look partially transparent to you?

  • RevTubbs

I couldn’t help it and ordered one of each!

Imma try and put me hands on one at the Ohio Pen Show.

Well, the Andersons should have them and I know they’ll be there.

They sure do get around! I like giving them my pen money.

The black looks nice, but I’ll wait for a stub.

Does anyone know whether the nibs will be interchangeable with the 540?

    • MrsGouletPens

The TWSBI Mini and 540 nibs are not interchangeable. The Mini uses a smaller nib from what I understand (though I have not seen it in person yet!).

Thanks, Mrs G. That won’t stop me buying one (or three) of course.

Anyone know if the nib units are interchangeable with my old TWSBI Diamond 530? I believe they are using a different nib source so they may have different characteristics. But, if they are interchangeable it would make me seriously consider a broad to fill out my range.

I think you’ll find that the broad nib will fit the 530. The italics won’t unless you take out the inner cap (with an eraser is the tactic I used) and replace it with the inner cap that comes with the italic nib. I think that’s why the italic costs $23 instead of $20 — that inner cap.

Thanks Lee, that’s what I was hoping.

One clear mini with a broad nib has been shipped.

My lovely new mini nib unit is, indeed, interchangeable with the nib unit from my 530. As you can see in the photo, the grip section is longer on the 530 but the feed is essentially identical. They swapped back and forth with no trouble at all as long as the grip section remained with its pen.

I cannot say anything regarding the fitment of 540 nib units because I have only a 530. Someone that knows the compatibility between 530 and 540 nib units may be able to help?

The mini is spectacular. The broad nib was only slightly misaligned – not enough to annoy anyone but a perfectionist and easily corrected with a couple of very slight thumb nail tweaks. I inked it up (Noodler’s Air-Corp) without any flushing just to see how it would perform and because I was too impatient. It worked very well and incredibly smoothly right off. There is an occasional skip at the beginning of a word but not enough to annoy. It seems to occur less frequently after a couple of full pages of writing.

This may be nothing more than new pen fascination but the mini seems a better designed and built pen than the 530. Not surprising since Speedy has a great reputation for iteration and upgrade. The tolerances of the threads seem tighter and everything is much more svelte but not simply because it is smaller.

This pen will replace a 1949 Sheaffer Touchdown Sentinel Deluxe Tuckaway as the pen that is always with me. We’ll see if it can maintain its starting position after a week or so.
