Hi Guys

Sorry for yet another Noob question

I know you use Shellac to glue rubber ink sacs on to the section nipple but what do you use with silicone sacs, I assume it won't stick to silicone or does it.

Also whilst on the subject of changing sacs with the rubber ones its recommended to dust the sac with pure talcum powder, which I have not got, could I use baby talc or corn flower instead.

Thanks

Paul

Best to stick to pure talcum powder as it's inert and causes no problems. I suspect that baby talc will contain other things. Cornflour isn't suitable either.

Shellac should work perfectly well for attaching silicone sacs.

Although I've used shellac successfully with silicone sacs, others have found it less secure than with latex. So we are now recommending the use of silicone adhesives (read more here (http://vintagepensblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/silicone-ink-sacs-additional-notes.html)).

Deb is spot on regarding talc. No real substitute -- should be available at any pharmacy (chemist's).

PS The adhesive issue really only applies if you are using real silicone sacs. If you are using the clear PVC sacs still widely sold as silicone, shellac will do just fine.

I had never considered this before, so glad you started this thread, Paul. Thus far I only have the black latex sacs in my small inventory, but have heard good things about silicone sacs and will no doubt give them a try at some point. Without knowing that a different adhesive is now recommended, I would have used shellac, as per usual. Also good to know that some sacs sold as silicone are not the real thing - thanks for that info as well, David.

As for talc, if you are unable to find pure talc locally, jbb (Jill) here on FPG sells some. I bought mine from her last year, one bag which is probably a lifetime supply for me, at a great price, IMHO. At that time she did not have an Etsy store so I purchased the talc - among other things - directly from her. Anyway, I do recommend her highly - plus she packages things very nicely and her writing is a thing of beauty. :p Talc For Sale (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/2445-Talc-For-Fountain-Pen-Restoration-Unscented?highlight=talc)

There are pros and cons for all sac materials, including silicone. I've posted some additional observations here (http://vintagepensblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/silicone-ink-sacs-additional-notes.html) and here (http://vintagepensblog.blogspot.com/2012/12/silicone-sacs-are-here-at-last.html).

A short video demonstrating how to find out if a sac is really silicone can be viewed here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMvbSJAJMus).
