Hello, folks. Here is my second go at a vintage restoration. Pretty amateur, I'll admit.

My wife found this pen at a thrift store where she volunteers. No idea how old it is, nor what make, nor even what material it is made of.

When I received it, it was crusted with a few blobs of white crud (paint?) on the outside, and I could not open it at all (except for the blind cap, which revealed a knurled knob - see below). After cleaning the outside, and soaking the pen for a short time, the nib section screwed out to reveal a piston in the barrel, which barely moved turning the knob. After cleaning out the inside of the barrel, I discovered that there was an ink window (it was completely blackened with dry ink initially). Eventually I got the piston out, cleaned it up, and replaced it, silicone greasing the inside of the barrel.

I cleaned the nib and feed, and polished the nib.

The nib bears the following engraving: 'Warrantet' (not 'Warranted'), 14 Carat, and '1ste Qual' or possibly '1ste Oual', but that makes less sense.

There is a tiny stamp on the barrel, 'EF', or possibly 'EP'

Anyhow, it has a pretty cool flexy nib, and though I still have some work to do on it (better piston seal), it works OK.

I am really just curious to know if anyone has seen such a pen before, or has any idea about its origins.

Cheers,

Ken

Not a clue, but it is neat! And the typos on the nib would endear it to me. :P

Lovely pen, you've done a nice job with it, too. I keep wondering whether the engraving on the nib is Dutch, Flemish or Afrikaans, but I don't actually know those languages and experimenting with phrases in Google and Google Translate were inconclusive.

LOL - I did the same thing, and came up empty-handed.... Google translate likes to think the word is Basque, but then won't translate it :)

It's not Dutch or Flemish. If it were, it would be something like:

Gewaarborgd
14 karaat
1ste Kwal

It's also neither German nor French, but that's where my knowledge of languages ends.
Actually, it looks as if a native speaker of Dutch or German -most likely German- tried to create an engraving in English without knowledge of the language.

Wow that is a cool find! I have seen this pen somewhere before but can't recall. It might of been when I was searching for my Vintage Waterman pen on eBay. I think I saw one in green.

Good work.

Looks like you've got yourself a nice pen, there. Can't help you with the ID, though.

Well done. Enjoy it.

Basque wouldn't have a w in it.

Platignum and Inoxcrom have used the "1ste Qual" stamp on their nibs but that does not make sense and is possibly one of the generic terms.
