    Default Cabin fever vegetable garden

Eighteen inches of snow and the coldest February on record will do that, even to a lazybones like me.

I don't have grow lights, it's 7° outside and in the garage (so I can't get to my rolling cart), got no basement, got no space...so I'm going for Gravel Garden Semi-Hydro Vegetable Root Madness!

The rosette-y thing in the foreground is something like raddichio that came packed in with some romaine. the rest are scallion and garlic roots, celery roots, romaine roots, and coming soon, baby bok choi roots.

The sunflower greens are in dirt this time. Next time: gravel!

    Awwwzz....

    Cabin fever. Update:

This may not seem like a big deal...but in the midst of miserable snowbound winter, with no Goodwill or anything like that, church thrifts closed this month, and no yard sales till spring, I've been in the Stuff-Hunting doldrums.

My latest obssession is Brown Drip Glaze stoneware. You know, that stuff everyone's mom used to have? I NEEDED some. To tide me over until spring, I bought some Pfaltzgraff coffee cups on fleabay. Reasonable price, good condition.

Today, I couldn't find my sunglasses...poked around the garage on the off chance they were hiding there. Found a LIKE NEW BROWN DRIP GLAZE MUG! From McCoy! 'Hiding' in plain sight!

So now I have 'the real McCoy,' lol.

Hey, it came from a garage! And free is better than cheap.

Well, I just received some yarn via InCo [WOW!] and "found" my knitting gear in a basket in the basement--so didn't have to buy new needles!

Well...here in Zone 7, we still have frigid temps and about two feet of snow. But I may have found my indoor garden 'calling:' microgreens and stubs!

I can't stand sprouts. Too fussy, too watery, and I don't want to eat the hulls and roots. But I can try growing the sprouts as microgreens in gravel.

The stubs are doing fine, especially that red romaine rosette. I don't know what it actually is, lol. The garlic and scallions are doing fine as usual.

Yes, baby bok choi was added. And some stubs of who-knows-what that came in a salad bag. More celery.

It seems the trick is not too much water with these stubs. I lost one romaine stub to rot. I only wish I had started this all in January.

Yeah...it hits a certain size, then refuses to go further. You get a modest regrowth and that's it. Last year, when I transplanted them outdoors, they did the same thing.

But it's soo cooool to watch them literally burst from the celery stub.
