    Default Gagging on a price

One vendor who I do business with had at the Ohio Pen Show a bottle of Parker Blue Sapphire about 3/4 full. I picked it up, and I heard the words "a hundred seventy-five dollars." I turned and saw the vendor's assistant looking at me and just to confirm, I asked if he was talking to me. He replied by saying he had and repeated the price. I put the bottle down and politely said nothing.

Some legends just get out of control.

I understand that ink is a consumable commodity. I understand that once it's gone, it's gone. I understand that over time an ink's rarity increases. I understand that fame and reputation can heavily increase a price.

I will never pay that for ink, I will find a substitute and be happy.

The sad thing is that I have tried the ink and like it; but I also know that it has... "issues" and is far from perfect... reputation sometimes out shines reality.

I ran across something similar last year. I found a partially used bottle of Montblanc Racing Green for $250. I laughed. I'm with Sammyo...there are alternatives which are close, more affordable, and allow you to smile at the money stilling sitting in your bank account.

Indeed. Last bottle of Sapphire I sold was $125.

Most I've ever paid was $150 for a bottle of Montblanc Sakura.

I've also bought one on ebay UK then taken it with me to the US for a friend who wanted some.

That wasn't a full bottle either but I think it cost £20 inclusive of P&P.

I will never own a bottle of Montblanc Sakura at that sort of price.

At rates like this I have to ask myself which I'd rather have: a Nakaya or three, three-quarters full bottles of ink.

    The answer is easy.

I spent a week or so going back and forth between Sapphire (samples from 2 reliable sources) and Diamine Blue Velvet.

Pretty happy with Blue Velvet. Similar vibe. Close in color. Better flow.

Would I buy a bottle of Penman if it was sitting right in front of me for a "normal" price? Yeah. I'd be thrilled but there are lots of inks out there that get you 90% of the way there. Why bother?

Sailor Red-Brown i'd be willing to slightly overpay for ...

I'd buy a bottle to try at that price and still probably complain about the cost of shipping...
FYI my most used ink is Sailor's "do-you" aka "midsummer" or "midsummer's day"; Penman Sapphire to me is just another blue, but I'm sure many will think that "do-you" is just another black.

I thought Doyou was a brown?

Must admit I'd like to try PPS simply to see what all the to-do is about, but not to the point of buying a bottle at the price they seem to go for.

Okay, this color variation is nice. Which currently available ink duplicates this, or is it really a $175 rarity?

...ever tried some of the high saturation Diamine inks, like Sargasso Sea? Or some Sailor, and oh my, are those inks Jentle! That being said, $30.- is my limit on bottled stuff - ink, whisk(e)y, wine - I'm sure I'm missing out on some experience, but I got more cash left to experience some more (if that makes any sense at all...)
