Default Does no one else just enjoy a nice medium nib!!!

    Evening fellow controlled leak fans.
Reading through the many post on here (hey it's better than watching MIC with the wife) everyone seems to love extreme nibs! "Oh I love my extreme ultra fine" "oh no you need to try a custom oblique quintuple broad" what's wrong with a juicy medium that writes on any type of paper without a nibmeister spending time and your money on it!!! Apologies if this is over the top but I'm 12 whisky's in and waiting for the train in the middle of nowhere... Merry Christmas xxx

You aren't alone and I'm stone-cold sober. The last big purchase was an Aurora 88 M directly from the hands of Dan Smith. He said "Do you want me to do anything to the nib?" and I said "Nope!".

It's true! The last two pens I got were a delta (medium Bock nib) and a Sheaffer prelude, both medium and both brilliant. (Very shocked by the Sheaffer)

I just received a Conklin Symmetric (modern) with a medium nib and can't believe how juicy it is. There is only one other medium nib that I repeatedly return to and it is on an old Sheaffer Javelin.

Ok I was going to save this rant for another day but... There are only 3 pens I have bought that required nothing other than pushing in a cartridge or converter... No pre flushing no nib work nothing!!! And they were a cross, a Sheaffer and a Parker! All relatively inexpensive pens. Why do we accept that a £1000 Visconti might need a bit of tuning?

I have two newly bought DolceVita oversized pens with medium nibs that have been flawless from first ink. I love them.

When I'm really trying to just get some work done and writing in a lined notebook? There is nothing better than a good writing round medium nib.

My delta is a wonderful medium, but did require cleaning thoroughly before it wrote properly.
I enjoy other nib sizes, but a juicy medium just seems to work on everything. Like the best of both worlds a fountain pen that can replace your ballpoint.

My writing is on the small size, but my preferred pens all have medium nibs. I like the way the ink flows. Fine nibs, while they may suit the size of my letters better, just look too weak. It's all a matter of taste.

I went on a bit of a journey trying all kinds of nib sizes. Settled on fine (Japanese medium) as being the best nib size for me, for everyday writing. But more recently I've discovered that some paler ink shades work better in medium nibs. So now I'm using both fine and medium nibs for my everyday writers. I can't get on with extra-fine nibs except for drawing and diagramming, where they are invaluable. I love broad italic and calligraphy nibs, but I only use them for "fancy" writing (greetings cards, inscriptions, title pages, etc).

I love the way a nice medium writes. But most of my writing is in my Leuchtturn journal with 5 mm dots and I have to write so large with a medium that I end up using two rows with each line of writing. So, I end up using fine most often so I don't end up going thru a book a month.

Wow you'd need tiny writing for that, we have time sheets at work like that, I find reverse writing is the best way to write in tiny boxes.

I have all ranges of nibs but I still love a standard medium. My pilot custom 812 has an incredible medium nib and is almost always in my pocket.

My regular writing is on the small side, so for writing a letter or filling pages for whatever reason, I rather EF/F, it works better. If I'm just having fun or trying to do fancier things or whatnot, then I want broader, usually broader than M, because that's the point, heh. So for me, M is just the red-headed step child lol, it's either too big or too small for most of what I want to do, I have no use for it. I did choose the Franklin-Christoph SIG nib in M, though.

I'm still a FP newbie, so learning about different nibs, and trying them all out, is a first goal. Other than that, from what I've been able to learn and experience, I deffinetly prefer the juicy medium. But I've learned that some situations sort of require a fine-ish nib. As a teacher, grading papers or tests with medium nibs is sometimes very troublesome, since 99.9% comes printed in the crappiest paper possible. Also, for small writing on the margin of books and papers, a fine or even a extra-fine is required. I could use "reverse writing", and have done sometimes, but it is usually too scratchy/toothie for me!!
