I click on "New Posts" and then click on the thread containing the new post. The forum software opens to the first post in the thread, not to the newest (for me) post, which is what I would prefer. Can this be changed?

Sure can. Instead of clicking on the title of the thread click on the circle with the two arrows pointing down that is directly to the left of the title. You can see it in the screenshot below.
