VERY spotty. As in, 'doesn't really work.'
My other pen is a Montblanc.
And my other blog is a tumblr!
And my latest ebook, for spooky wintery reading:

Hello Jar
Its not about storming out. It is about all the changes that they have made. New complicated rules and regulations, slower than molasses in winter connection, poor site layout and so on..... What used to be a friendly and well run forum is quickly becoming a maze. It is too bad. Change is not always good and the administrators should have pooled users before changing.
Some members supported the forum through pen, ink purchase or donations and I think we deserve the courtesy of being asked our opinion. Without members there would be no forum. What attracted members in the past is probably going to make them go somewhere else now and that is too bad.
Just my two cents

SQL issues for me along with the occasional redirect.
I'm no computer expert but is anyone else wondering if Wim apologized to all the people he's banned and restored their posting privileges and deleted posts if this wouldn't all get fixed?
Nope, not really.
I'm getting SQL (database) errors, glacial speeds, and yes, it's finally offline again.
I have a feeling that some of these issues aren't malign. IPboard is a cheap and easy choice for forums, and is a first choice when one is just starting out. But what happens is that third-party plugins get installed, which change the database, and then they start conflicting with each other. Then you try to re-install the software, only to discover that the database backup doesn't comply with the foundation software any more, because it was changed by the plugins, so you kludge things so that it works again. Until the next time. (Don't ask me about the love/hate relationship I have with WordPress!)
It ends up being a choice between the chewing-gum-and-bailer-twine approach, and spending thousands on a professional who can actually make you a custom package which will be stable. And, of course, if you rely on the kludge system long enough, it ends up being a right, irreversible, mess. (Now, don't ask me about the love/hate relationship I have with Windows!)
Then if you add the malcontents in to the equation (read: porn redirects), you get what you are now seeing.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. (But I don't see the love/hate for windows bit. Just ditch it and your bugs disappear )It ends up being a choice between the chewing-gum-and-bailer-twine approach, and spending thousands on a professional who can actually make you a custom package which will be stable. You have a bunch of amateurs using the easy option and are now too far down the road to go back.
Perhaps their best idea would be to salvage as much as they can and then use a more stable system like vBulletin on a Linux box and find a guy who will maintain the site for a reasonable monthly fee.
At the same time they can lose the gimmicky 3rd party stuff that costs extra.
vBulletin is fine for busier sites like linuxforums or ubuntuforums, so I would think it would sail through on a low traffic site like FPN.
Reading between the lines, it seems that most of the problems have been with guys who run windows or iPad/iPhone apps.
I have yet to see anything funny on my Linux box.
I think it's two seperate issues, one thing you can be assured of is that those banned will stay banned. I have no idea on the other but would expect it be fixed yet some seem to think the constant changes hve resulted in an unmanageabe mess that's imploding. Sad if that happens but if it does the old saying " it couldn't have happened to a nicer person" ( Wim) carries some weight.

[QUOTE=whych;22656]You haven't seen anything out of the ordinary on your Linux box because the smaller numbers of Linux, AIX, Unix and other systems other than Windows makes them low-profit targets for those disreputable ones who think damaging things is fun. A bit oversimplistic (security is better on *nix boxes) but essentially correct. It's not much fun writing a virus that has no teeth to disrupt the system. You haven't seen anything out of the ordinary on your Linux box because the smaller numbers of Linux, AIX, Unix and other systems other than Windows makes them low-profit targets for those disreputable ones who think damaging things is fun. Also, you are forgetting tha M$ leaves itself wide open to exploits with all it's visual tools and the rest that make it easy for anyone to develop buggy software that can be exploited.
Since we are off topic, let's explore the bit by D Armstrong:
What if the picture storage is part of the database and is stored as a binary in the database.I have a feeling that some of these issues aren't malign. IPboard is a cheap and easy choice for forums, and is a first choice when one is just starting out. But what happens is that third-party plugins get installed, which change the database, and then they start conflicting with each other. Any amount of scanning won't detect any malicious code attached to the image file unless it also scans the database entries.
I have never understood why people choose anything other than vBulletin. Every forum I've used with it has been relatively stable, and every forum I've used with other options goes through hassles far more often. I have known the people paying for boards on many occasions and believe that vBulletin is not a particularly pricey solution at all.
Probably not at all pricey when you consider that to save $50 or so, you run the risk of weeks of downtime and hairpulling trying to find the bugs.
Also, can ipBoard point to any high volume traffic sites that run glitch free the way vBulletin can?
Perhaps it's the fact that vBulletin in Linux based and the ipBoard runs on Windows? ... or that you have win users trying to fix a Linux system but know nothing about Linux.
