I have heard people specifically filling their white tortoise pelikans with a syringe to avoid staining the section. I also know of someone on FPN who deliberately dunked the entire section of a white tort in Bay State Blue so that it *would* be stained.
"What are moon-letters?" asked the hobbit full of excitement. He loved maps, as I have told you before; and he also loved runes and letters, and cunning handwriting, though when he wrote himself it was a bit thin and spidery.

I use BSB with a black 78G, so that the ink can do what comes naturally to it without bothering me.

But ouch @ BSB & the white tort. Why would anyone want to do such a thing? I don't use a syringe with my tort but then I use inks I know won't stain the white section.

Why would you want to do that?

I fill my White Torties with a syringe so they don't get ink on their white sections. I also fill my Pilot Con-70 convertors with a syringe as I worry that I may spill the in trying to use to button top.

Yup me too ... The pressure created from the syringe in the converter or carts really cleans them out great and quick.

I have noticed that with mine but opted for the CON-50 when the button would not pop up anymore. Maybe I should try that.
I just love the volume of the CON-70, syringe-filled. Lasts a long time.

I have a 20ml syringe I keep just for flushing pens. The added pressure is great for blasting off dried crunchy bits.

I syringe fill converters all the time. It actually proves to be less messy this way.

I syringe fill my Kaweco Sport cartridges at home...a little inconvenient at work. So, I placed an order for a couple Kaweco converters. I'll see how they work out.

I use a 1.0ml syringe (ultra-thin) to re-fill most of my converters/cartridges. In fact, I often pre-mix ink in the syringe before "injection".

For example, I like mixing about 60% Pelikan Brilliant Black with 40% Private Reserve Copper Burst to create an intense version of the J Herbin Lie de The, which is great to use in my finer nibs.

    How I miss chemistry labs!

Oh~ Syringe is also extremely helpful when I feel like rotating a pen off my daily carry when it's still half full of ink. I just use it to suck the remaining ink out and transfer that to the next entrant for a clean handover. (I refuse to waste my ink.)

hmmm. I've been doing this ever since I can remember. A few people who saw me in the office do this thought it was strange, and even the pharmacist where I bought the syringe from thought it was strange. I fill up my ink cartridges for my inkjet this way too, so it was only a natural to fill up my cartridges for my pens as well. I've tried the "proper" way of using the cartridge, but I really didn't like it as the one time I did do it, I nearly knocked over the bottle.

Good to see I am not alone.

I guess because I use syringes at work (nurse practitioner) I'm more comfortable with syringes.

I won't fill my White Torty with a syringe because if it gets stained they'll fix it (and I won't have used a noodler's ink, so my warranty will not be voided.) No fountain pen should be pampered and the wonderful filling system not put to use because it could stain. Just my opinion.

    Or is this just odd?

Seems like a good way of getting a 100% fill!
Without reading further, I'll say yes. This is how you know you have a habit.

    Har har har!

No, I will not get tired of saying that.

Seriously, though, I do prefer using cartridges over converters, cos the cartridge holds a tad more, and I don't know why. Maybe cos when I started using fountain pens, I used cartridges. Oh wait, it's also because Noodler's Black doesn't come in cartridges. And the other inks I prefer don't come in, say, Platinum cartridges (which I use in my Nakayas).

As for the third question, no, not odd at all.

"White Torty"? Would that be a Pelikan Souverän Tortoiseshell-White M400/M600?

This has been informative and amusing. I prefer to use the converter attached to the section to flush the works out. When changing inks, a rare experience for me, I enjoy the mix of colors at first, but will mainly use the converter to flush out most of the old ink. Very amusing the use of syringes. I am a diabetic and want as little to do with syringes as possible. So, there's another perspective for you.

As with NOS pens, there are always perspectives that you never thought of.

For flushing, I use a bulb syringe, much faster than a converter.

I too use a bulb syringe. Brian Goulet has video demonstrating this highly efffective method of cleaning fountain pens.
