    Default Ink Review: Diamine Vermillion

Here is my review for Diamine Vermillion ink
    • Flow Rate: Very good, wet in broader nibs
    • Lubrication: Good on several different papers, very good with broad nibs.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Quite saturated
    • Shading Potential: Lots of shading seen
    • Sheen: Not seen
    • Show-Through:

    • Tomoe River 52gsm and 68gsm
    • Cheaper generic 80gsm printer papers & lined pads.
    • Field Notes
    • Oxford
    • Silvine
    • Rhodia
    • Strathmore

    • Spread / Feathering / Wooly Line: Wooly line seen occasionally on Field Notes with B nib.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after several days in the pen
    • Staining (pen): Not seen - easy clean-up
    • Staining (hands): Not seen - easy clean-up
    • Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
    • Water resistance: Not at all water-resistant
    • Availability: Available from Diamine Inks web-site and other outlets. 30ml plastic or 80ml glass bottles.

Yes, so do I. The colour is very similar to Sailor Kingdom Note Nipponia Nipon (Japanese Crane.) I have a sample vial of that ink I recently acquired.

I love the color. I thought I had read in the past that it was dry though. Maybe it was the pen used. I have been longing for Sailor-Amanita muscaria, this may be close. I already have Diamine-Sunset and KWZ-Grapefruit, which are both in this color range. Still I prefer the Sailor ink. I've never heard of the other one you mentioned. Once I run low on one of the red-orange inks I have already, I may sample the Vermillion. It is pretty to me. Great review by the way!

You are right, this is a dry watery ink. Have tried it in a number of different pens and it just doesn't feel good at all.
I have bottles of KN Amanita and Nipponia, and Vermilion is nothing like them, especially regarding saturation & lubrication.
Amanita is a very special colour - I have many red-orange inks and haven't found anything the same.

You're welcome. I didn't find it dry in my Lamy Safari, especially when I used the B nib. In fact it felt quite wet. Diamine Sunset is more orange and I don't have KWZ Grapefruit. I was sent a sample of Sailor KN Nipponia Nipon aka Japanese Crane and when I compared the colours, as you can see they are quite close.

I have tried the Amanita muscaria, thanks to a friend on this forum. Ever since I've tried to find something close. The only two I could find fairly close were the two I mentioned. Neither of the two I mentioned were as good as the Sailor ink. I did get close to it with one of those digital color charts with the number and all. I even tried to get Trekker Inks to make some for me, but they never replied back. Now I know they went out of business, but I tried to contact them before that. I've never seen nor tried the Japanese Crane ink. A western broad is a little too broad for me. A western broad italic is fine though. If I ever come across this ink, I will get some. I also tried Fuyu gaki, and Caran d'Ache red...forget the exact name, but it wasn't that close. I did like the Fuyu gaki, but it wasn't close enough, plus it fades. I also tried Dragon's Napalm by Noodler's. I can't remember them all, but it was a bunch.

I once had a sample of P.I. Fuyu gaki, but although I first thought it would be close to Diamine Vermillion, when I compared my original F.G swab it was lighter and less saturated. In fact, my F.G sample seemed to be almost as orange as Yu yake is, and didn't seem to lean particularly red.

I didn't have to do any Photoshop adjustments to make this colour scan accurate. It looks exactly like it does on the paper.
