Default Ink Review: Diamine Cherry Sunburst from the Guitar Series

Today I’m reviewing Diamine Cherry Sunburst ink.

This ink is one of the Diamine Guitar range of inks and the ink colours were designed to represent Gibson colours for their Les Paul guitars.

There are five inks in the series, and they were all exclusive to Germany until January 2019. Now they are in the Diamine standard series of inks available from Diamine and many other retailers.

Diamine Cherry Sunburst is a lovely reddish copper shade. It’s not particularly saturated and exhibits some very attractive shading. It’s my favourite ink from this range.

I found the flow very good, fairly wet, but not too wet. It flowed smoothly across the paper and lubricated the nib tip very well. It felt less dry than several other inks that I have used in this colour range.

It flowed much wetter, and looked darker in the Lamy Safari pen with B nib that I used.

While I was writing with the Parker Ellipse with M nib it dried within 12-16 seconds on Clairefontaine Triomphe paper and once dry it didn’t smudge or smear.

It didn’t suffer from any hard starts or non-starts when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance.

It easily washes off of my hands with soap and water and it easily flushes out of my converters and pens just using water.

It’s not a waterproof ink, but exhibits some water resistance.

Available directly from Diamine Inks UK or many retailers Worldwide in 80ml glass bottles or 30ml plastic bottles.

Love this! All the tan-orange-red guitar colours should be arriving with me any day now (I didn't feel a need for the blue).

I can't tell the difference between this ink and the Ancient Copper.

What do you think specifically about the comparison between the two, Chrissy?

These two inks fooled me. When I did the chroma tests I found that it's Ancient Copper that has a bit more red in it, and is more saturated than Cherry Sunburst. Cherry Sunburst is more like a translucent red lacquer colour.

Edited to reflect the findings in the chroma tests.

Chroma tests comparison between Cherry Sunburst and Ancient Copper now included. From their chroma tests, Ancient Copper looks like it contains more red than Cherry Sunburst. Not what I expected at all.....

Thank you, Chrissy for the chroma test comparison.

Looks like the Cherry Sunburst is a slightly less saturated (or thinner) version of the Ancient Copper.

It is less saturated, and it would need to be in order to better resemble the lacquer coating on a guitar, that allowed the wood to show through.

I hadn't been able to find anyone in the States selling the guitar inks until today, when I learned that Goulet Pens is carrying them. Hopefully more US retailers will start or have started carrying them as well.
