    Default EFNIR: Platinum Red

Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Platinum Red

This is review #258 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy. This was a cartridge that came with a red Preppy. The ink is not really red. It's more pink with some orange underneath or coral-y. I included Diamine Peach Haze in the comparison not because they are similar in color, but because they are similar in transparent neony properties.... I don't actually have any ink similar to this color.

The scanner hates this color. It removed all hint of orange or red and made the ink magenta. The ink is more a coral color, something like #FF5757. The microscope, on the other hand, did a pretty good job - when dense, it's red, otherwise it's pink, and bits of orange pop up here and there.

I rated sheen "low" not because there's only a little, but because you don't really see it - even on TR, you have to look for it. The dry time, line width, and line width microscope image all seem to me to support the idea that this ink is dry.

Errata: "the hissed in unison." should be "they hissed in unison."

Zoomed in photo (Shading is exaggerated. The color isn't too bad - I think this is the most accurate representation of what I see.)

Screenshot (Depending on the screen, it's too orange or too pink. Cameras hate this color. It's got an orange undertone, but shows mostly pinkish, but a little coral-y. Just get a sample! )

Scan of Completed Review (I had to tweak this image massively. Heaven knows how awful it may look on other screens. It was pure magenta when I started. Now it's too orange, but that's as close as I can make it. But it's still not the right color.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (The absorbent paper is too neon, the copy paper is too orange. (Found it hard to focus on this ink.))

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 276µm. With 258 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Microscope image (400x. This is pretty close to the colors I saw. The yellow-orange colors were more vibrant and the white areas were actually pink.)

Microscope image (100x. This is a happy ink! (I'm sure those are happy tear-streaks under its eyes.))

Other (This is on Tomoe River 52gsm (original) paper.)

Thanks @LizEf for another excellent review
I wonder why so many red inks are not really red but they hover around the coral/ pink spectrum.
I'm starting to wonder if there's a twist in the story line and there's someone pretending to be the "high wizard", maybe the original villain?

Right? Cheap and safe dyes, perhaps? ETA: Though I wonder if there's a cultural difference in what "red" should look like.

Autumn leaves come to life! Friend or foe? The tip of a pterodactyl wing! Accompanied by groans, from the leaves or wings or skeletons is yet unknown. What can it mean?

Happy to report that I have (or had) this ink, which did indeed come with my Red-For-Editing Preppy. All I can remember about the color is that I liked it. And what do you know—-I have the comparison inks, too. But I had no idea of the sheen! Maybe I still have a cart floating around somewhere. You've made me want to try it again.

Liz, thanks once again for the review and cliffhanger. And hooray for Tuesdays!

Great review. And those microscope shots are cool.

I think I will like this "red" because of the coral-ly hues, not the pinkiness.
I don't have a coral red ink, hmmm... tempting.

Happy editing! Perhaps it needs a wet-ish pen or Tomoe River paper to show the sheen well.

NO! It can't be Tuesday already...

Thank you so much +-again Liz for a stellar review - and especially for making me feel genuinely happy with the smiley face microscopy.

I quite like this ink - and use it (in cartridge form) in various pens from time to time. I rather like the hue (which definitely isn't red) and it's lovely for drawing flowers. Ironically for a Platinum ink, I think it performs better in medium and wider nibs, but it's useful for markup in finer ones too.

As for the 'high wizard', I'm almost holding my breath until next week. But I don't think my lung specialist would be too happy with me if I really did that!

You are most welcome! And thank you! Glad the micro smiley face made you happy - I couldn't help grinning when I saw it.

Thanks for adding your experience. As long as you let go of your "red" expectations, it's a nice ink. I'm still using the remains of the cartridge in my Platinum Prefounte F (mostly I'm not using it because I know the ink will keep in a Platinum pen for a long time and I have too many pens inked - but I use it when I want an ink that will stand out on the page).

I believe my Dad's doctor told him once that the secret to a long life was to keep breathing in and out. As long as he did that, he would stay alive. :P So, please continue inhaling and exhaling! Next week will arrive before you know it.
