Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Platinum Red
This is review #258 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:
Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy. This was a cartridge that came with a red Preppy. The ink is not really red. It's more pink with some orange underneath or coral-y. I included Diamine Peach Haze in the comparison not because they are similar in color, but because they are similar in transparent neony properties.... I don't actually have any ink similar to this color.
The scanner hates this color. It removed all hint of orange or red and made the ink magenta. The ink is more a coral color, something like #FF5757. The microscope, on the other hand, did a pretty good job - when dense, it's red, otherwise it's pink, and bits of orange pop up here and there.
I rated sheen "low" not because there's only a little, but because you don't really see it - even on TR, you have to look for it. The dry time, line width, and line width microscope image all seem to me to support the idea that this ink is dry.
Errata: "the hissed in unison." should be "they hissed in unison."
Zoomed in photo (Shading is exaggerated. The color isn't too bad - I think this is the most accurate representation of what I see.)
Screenshot (Depending on the screen, it's too orange or too pink. Cameras hate this color. It's got an orange undertone, but shows mostly pinkish, but a little coral-y. Just get a sample! )
Scan of Completed Review (I had to tweak this image massively. Heaven knows how awful it may look on other screens. It was pure magenta when I started. Now it's too orange, but that's as close as I can make it. But it's still not the right color.)
Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (The absorbent paper is too neon, the copy paper is too orange. (Found it hard to focus on this ink.))
Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 276µm. With 258 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)
Microscope image (400x. This is pretty close to the colors I saw. The yellow-orange colors were more vibrant and the white areas were actually pink.)
Microscope image (100x. This is a happy ink! (I'm sure those are happy tear-streaks under its eyes.))
Other (This is on Tomoe River 52gsm (original) paper.)
