    Default Suddenly Summer

This past winter has been particularly trying. Usually spring lasts about 3 weeks here, but last week we started to get above zero temps and we went from this:

    To this:

Today we have a predicted high of 24C and it is already 20C before mid day, and the fields now look like this:

in the space of one week.

I was a bit over dressed when I went out to take that last picture and to feed a cat that has taken up residence in my barn. The sweater was enough to make me sweat. The ground is really soggy and the run off is fierce, and there is so much water in my basement I could start an amateur fish farm.

My house is on top of a hill, but water does run into the basement and needs pumping out. One day I would like to get a rubber injection all around the foundations. The fields are flooded and the marsh below the house looks like a lake.

Oh no! After baking yesterday I woke up to a heavy snowfall. Maybe it is not Suddenly Summer anymore.

We had snow today. Snow. Effing snow. My new least favourite substance. T shirt weather yesterday.
"What are moon-letters?" asked the hobbit full of excitement. He loved maps, as I have told you before; and he also loved runes and letters, and cunning handwriting, though when he wrote himself it was a bit thin and spidery.

I'm sorry. You're getting the snow we got on Sunday. On the bright side, it melted quickly and temps are a little higher again (though Thursday has rain forecast).

I hope you're not flooding too much, Scrawler.

My basement is flooding much more than usual and needs constant attention to make sure the pump is working.

Rained all over my lunar eclipse viewing. Now we have a freeze warning in effect for tonight (in South Louisiana). Crazy.

Freezing in South Louisiana? I have never heard of such a thing. I thought it was warm and humid, almost semi-tropical. At least I am used to and prepared for the cold. Do you even have heating systems in the home?

Cold, callous and heartless people, abandon unwanted cats at the dump and the farm gates. Sometimes they do not make it. Sometimes they are preyed on by fishers and coyotes. My own house cat, who has now been with me for 11 years, was a feral product of abandoned cats. Some years ago I found a young mother cat with 5 kits abandoned at the dump. At that time my wife said that if I brought any more cats home, she was leaving. Fortunately I have really good live traps and a cheerful relationship with the animal welfare society. It is my duty, as a human being, to care for those that have been maltreated. I have it in mind that next time I catch people driving out from the city to abandon animals, I shall strip them naked and dump them in the middle of the forest and see how they like it.

That's how we got The Best Dog Ever (our border collie/aussie cross). Someone dumped an 8 week old puppy at the height of the Texas summer. She nearly died of starvation and dehydration. Now she'd take on a lion for us, and is the smartest, friendliest, most wonderful dog we've ever owned. I rather approve of your punishment for such hard hearted people.

Excellent idea. Give 'em hell, Scrawler. If I lived nearby, I'd help you. Most of my critters were abandoned. A litter of 5 kittens (two weeks old) found on a movie set. A 3 year old cat left to starve, from a backyard breeding mill. A German Shepherd puppy, put in a box on a riverbank. Yes, indeed, I'd be happy to help you on a mission like that.

And if you listen very hard, the tune will come to you at last.

The first crop of hay was cut a couple days ago and rolled up yesterday.

BTW. The cat that was abandoned over winter is now adopted and living with a very nice lady who has named him Romeo.

The field is beautiful. Brings back fond memories of being a child - laying in our field watching clouds. The best part of the year.
