Hello all,

I am a PhD student from Uppsala, who is also an analog romantic. I like stereo audio (and long for a vinyl player), photography (though mostly digital, for cost reasons), mechanical watches, and writing on paper.

I suppose it started back in junior high with a couple of sheaffer school/student pens, followed by sheaffer no nonsense - all long gone. Until fairly recently I've been a mechanical pencil-typ person, (rotring, staedtler, pentel), with a couple of ball-point pens (rotring, caran d'ache), but the last couple of years I've been drawn back to fountain pens. It started with Lamy Safari growing on me, followed by a Vista and a 2000 for home use. I just recently bought two more Safaris, though one turned out to be a fake (!).

I really like the Lamy 2000, but I also quite like the Safari. I may be sacrilege in this forum, but I quite enjoy the simplicity of the cartridges, and having found the Montverde replacements I don't feel too limited regarding ink. I have a converter as well, but I'll be using that mainly on my home-Safari.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have! I absolutely love geeking it up, and I really enjoy passionate and specific reviews, which is part of what brought me here. The other part is that fake Safari. I want to find reputable dealers - there are no good brick and mortar stores where I live, and the webshops leave a lot to be desired too.

Welcome. My parents were born in Sweden and emigrated to the US (seperately) when they were in their late teens. I like old things also and have a few mechanical watches (wrist and pocket) and clocks. The ticking is comforting....

Welcome! Was your fake Safari a Jinhao or Hero or was it completely fake? How were you able to find out? (Just curious)

Hi, I think we'll get along. I'm also unashamedly analogue and prefer mechanical watches, proper metal cameras which use something called 'film', steam locomotives, valve (tube) radios...

Have fun:)

The fake was a "genuine" fake, i.e., sold as, and marked as the real thing. If I didn't own several others I probably wouldn't have noticed it, but a lot of small things started to add up to a bad vibe. In comparison with a genuine, to me, the most telling difference was the nib, but it was also untested. All my other lamys have had ink residue on the tips from testing.

Welcome, from a Swedish American. :)

Vinyl records, film cameras and Lamy pens -- me, too. Maybe it's genetic?
