View Full Version : Another nib experiment

Hello everyone,

I made this nib as a little test if it can be done. Well, it can, so I also made a grip and designed a whole pen around it. I will actually be throwing this nib out because I scratched it and because the slit is kinda crooked - I need me a better sawblade for the operation.
Other than that, it's good, writes great :-)

My compliments on a great effort; I should think you'd need a good saw to work on that stuff - a very hard blade in special material!

Well done.

Actually not really. I use a normal hss slitting saw I surface ground to reduce thickness. I just forgot to turn down the rpm and I kinda melted the teeth into the nib. Knowing this is just a test, I finished the job with a 6/0 piercing saw.

To be continued I guess :-) Another part made ( I make these in between regular projects so progress is slow ), first quarter of the body. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Also, the underside of the nib

Very nicely done.

How on earth do you form stainless like that? Every time (in the past on old cars) I had to work on the stuff I found it terrible - the stuff work-hardens - and it is tough enough to start with. Do you use a lot of heat? Or have you found an alloy that does not work harden?

Thank you :-)
This is done by stock removal and though it is pretty hard and gummy ( it is austenitic steel so it's pretty tough), with carbide tooling it doesn't stand a chance. Except for, you know, that HSS slightly dull sawdisc that melted itself onto the nib :-D

Thanks; better get a carbide saw disc then - or at least one with plenty of cobalt in it!

Yes, HSS Co works great :-)

Here's another part ( two parts ). I finished the piston control knob and blended it together with the rear body part. You can see I didn't go for a seamless look. I thought about placing a metal ring there, but I felt it wouldn't look good

I also made the ink chamber from some acrylic tubing. I bought it for this exact purpose, so I don't have to drill, ream and internally polish yet another part. And because this is neither a demo, nor it will have an ink window, I left the chamber rough on the outside. More for the glue to bite :-)

Assembled, partially

This gap showed after I put the body together and screwed the section in with o-ring in place. Which means the parts are made just right and the o-ring will be squeezed just by that much.

And whole pen, by which I mean parts made so far.

Wow? That's great. What do you make the feed from?

I have some ebonite stock I will probably use for this one, though I used clear acrylic for my feeds in the past and they worked great.

Thank you :-) I'm flattered, though I have a long way to go before I'm anywhere near being called a master :-)

Here's another part for the pen, though not finished yet.

Thank you :-)

Still not even close to finished, but I got the overlay etched and polished. Can't wait to make the feed and ink this pen up :-)
