Do we have any members in or near Boulder who could provide a little assistance. My niece will be going to Boulder this coming March and will need to rent a room. I was wondering if anyone could help me to find an accommodation for her. She is English, and has directed her inquiry to me, because I am at least on the same continent.

Hi Scrawler. This is simply from the on-line classifieds so I have no personal knowledge of it: http://www.classifiedads.com/roomates-ad145270630.htm I've spent quite a bit on time in the Boulder area over the years though. Is your niece going to school there?

She has recently completed her masters degree and will be participating in a design project for 5 months. I have never been to Colorado so know nothing about it, but I am concerned that she be safe.

I have checked this out. They want a longer term arrangement than the 5 months she is looking for.

I've contacted a realtor in Boulder who is supposed to email me local rental info which I'll pass on. Is your niece affiliated with the University there? They might have short term housing.

I love Boulder and spend a lot of time there. We even have relatives and friends who live there. I find it a very safe city, to be honest, but I have mostly lived in larger urban areas (and Berkeley), so I might have a higher tolerance for urban issues. There's homelessness, some druggy or hippie culture, and there are the typical "college town" issues. There seems to be a fair number of transients, like any fun college town. But it doesn't feel unsafe in general.

The one thing is, I hate to say this, but I wonder if she should really do this herself, in person. Maybe she can arrive a week early, stay in a hotel and look for a place? I know when I was younger and looking for places to live, I always wanted to drive around during the day to see what was nearby, and I especially wanted to see if I felt safe there at night, or waiting for public transportation, or walking where I needed to go. Maybe the school or whoever runs her program can help her. Or a broker might be helpful. I just would feel iffy if it were my niece doing this via internet. JMHO.

I tend to agree, but was hoping to make contact with people on the ground, who could advise her directly. I am waiting to hear back from her about the advice already given, and to get more info about what she will be doing. She is "on the road" right now because she has been traveling to set up an art installation.
