Saw a thread on FPN and I decided to try it on my 78g. I am really liking the effect of strategic matte and shiny black portions of the pen. No real good light except my desk lamp but I wanted to zoom in on the "brushed" finish.

Neato!
How did you deal with the problem of the cap rings being painted on (and thus easy to accidentally remove)?

I masked them off with tape. I had trouble getting close to the rings anyway. :( I am just going to sand them off as they are painted anyway.

Do you have a shot of the full pen? Looks really neat.

I do, but you can't see it very well. I'll try a full daylight shot when I get home.

That's what I figured you'd do as it would be verrry difficult to sand between the rings!
Looking forward to seeing what the whole pen looks like :D

I was actually going to leave it shiny between and below the rings. I just cant get close enough to the top ring to make if look good. The barrel is nice and I left the section shiny.

The shiny black accentuates the sanded matt parts really well. The texture is looks similar to the Lamy2000.

I did something like that to a cheap plastic mech pencil last year.

Nice work, Ivan! I'd be so tempted to try to sand even closer to the rings, heh heh...but that's just me :jester:

Like everyone said, really nice look. :) What grit papers did you use?

Thanks. I used 2000 grit wet/dry paper.

Thank you. Will practice on cheap plastic first -- maybe a gel pen haha.

If you use it dry, it is rough enough to remove the shine and leave the "brush" marks, as you can see.

You do some really kewl stuff, and this is no exception!

Is the pen black? Looks teal in the second shot.

Thanks Sailor, it is black. The light from the window was reflecting a bit of the sky giving it that color. :D

very kewl and great work. Bravo!

So, any thoughts on going with a matte finish on your helmet now?

It might be doable but I have to figure out what is going to go matte and what will stay glossy. I need to find some better masking material too. Then I have to be quick since not wearing the helmet makes it a little hard to breath. I left my spare helmet somewhere around here. :p
