Anyone have tricks or products suitable for carrying pencils along with other pens in a standard pen/pencil case (not a fountain pen case with individual slots)? If I throw them in loose, they not only get broken points, which is OK, but they shed graphite all over. Putting them in snack-size baggies is...inelegant :)

How about a multi compartment pen/pencil case?

Normally I have 3 wooden pencils in my Age Bag pencil case. They are in repurposed felt pen slipcase that came with a cheap Chinese pen. In the past I used to carry more pencils, and I may well start to do this again now that I have some decent colouring pencils. I'll either leave them in their original tin or, as my father used to do, wrap a couple of elastic bands around them - one at each end - to stop them banging about. Who cares if it's inelegant?

Pencil caps. Strange concept to wrap your mind around, but it definitely works.

Pencil caps are definitely the way to go. For art school, I have to carry multiple pencils with at least 1" of the lead exposed and then finely shaped into dagger points. The ones from Jet Pens work very well to keep them from breaking as I carry them from home to class. There used to be smaller ones sold, shaped sort of like the slipcaps on old Bic crystal pens, but I haven't been able to find those anywhere. My father, an accountant, always had them lying around the house when I was a child.

I use a couple of these at the moment: http://www.pencilthings.com/product-p/201200-pencil-shield.htm

However, my favorite thing to use are the erasers from the Kum Tip-Top pencil, because they take up little space.

Oh, I'm glad this thread popped back up again. I located a source for small, inexpensive pencil caps.

Five protectors for $2.39. With a pencil sharpener thrown in for good measure.

I slip small pieces of plastic tubing over the point. Works great and was free since we had some of it in a drawer in the workshop.

thebubblegoose, great idea.

I use a Midori stationery box, and i mostly use the Faber Castell Perfect pencil cap on the pencil i carry. Or put it in a soft sleeve.

I make my own pencil caps by winding (and glueing but not to the pencil) a paper strip tightly around the pencil. When the glue is dry pinching off, trimming and glueing one end. If I want additional security when transporting a capped pencil I use a small piece of electrical or duct tape to hold it in place on the pencil.

(My wife thinks I should have been a Blue Peter presenter. Not over pencil caps, but the use of sticky back plastic to add cap rings to pens without, but I'm sure she would say the same over the pencil caps if I showed her one I had prepared earlier)
