There is a mark on the metal lid of this jar/inkwell that looks like "15" . Does anyone know what that means?

I agree with jar, it isn't a silver hallmark or anything like that.
It may be silver plated if it is white metal with some parts looking slightly yellow

In my misspent youth I spent some time in bars and it looks like a 1/5 Gill measurement that we used to measure spirits with they did not have the / so the fraction was shown by stamping the second number lower down.
I believe 1/5 gill is 0.999 of a fluid ounce by the way

That would make sense.
