(http://www.dannzeman.com/2012/09/02/for-sale-twsbi-micarta-w-0-9mm-stub/)I bought this clipped version of the TWSBI Micarta, along with an additional clipless one, for a review (http://fpgeeks.com/2012/04/twsbi-micarta-fountain-pen-the-awesome-review/) I did. Initially, I couldn’t decide between the two so I bought both. Turns out, I prefer the clipless. I added a little character to the stock Broad nib by grinding it into a 0.9mm stub. It provides excellent line variation and is as smooth as butter. Many people have reported flow issues with the Micarta, but since I’ve used this and ground it myself, I can assure the flow is consistent and just a smidge on the wet side. But that can always be adjusted to the buyer’s preference. The Micarta features a #6 sized steel nib that, along with the clip, is gold-tone plated to complement the burgundy color of the Micarta material. The international cartridge/converter works as expected and includes the converter, but no cartridges. The pen is in excellent condition, only having been used a few times and comes with the original box.The Micarta material is very interesting and is what attracted me to this pen. The description from TWSBI’s website:
What Micarta is: Micarta industrial laminates are normally phenolic, epoxy, silicone, or melamine resin based thermoset materials reinforced with fiberglass, cotton cloth, paper, carbon fiber or other substrates.
TWSBI doesn’t give any additional details about the specific materials in the laminate. Regardless of the exact materials used, the Micarta feels warm and natural, much more so than ebonite or hard rubber. The texture allows for a positive grip even with moisture or oils on your skin. One advantage to this material is that it’s very lightweight and nearly indestructible. TWSBI isn’t offering the Micarta with a stub nib yet so having it ground is your only option. If you’ve been looking for one, there’s no reason to look any further. At this price you’re getting a slight discount on the pen and the grind thrown in for free. $90 SOLD
