As they say: Necessity if the mother of invention =)
I desperately wanted to photograph the pen stand that my father had made for me, but I had no "legitimate" lighting equipment... so I searched the house!
As you can see in the photo of the set-up, I used four beer glasses (hoping for some headroom), a white t-shirt that I sacrificed for the project (it had to be cut in order to be useful), some painter's tape to hold things in place, two shop-lights from the garage (one resting atop a steady-cam), a stray piece of white poster board, and one folded 8.5 x 11 piece of standard copy paper (to add reflection).

From the above point of view, things look messy! But from the camera's point of view, the results pleased me no end:
