I think the best value will be an NOS Balance II from nibs.com

$129 for a 14k nib, vintage styling, and a free nib tuning from John Mottishaw?
It's a steal.

If you want to forgo the nib tuning for $15 less: http://www.isellpens.com/product-p/v-shfbalanceblkmed.htm

Ick. I'll go broke buying classic vintage Sheaffers before I'll buy any of the pens made in the last 20 years or so.

Wow, such a broad brush! I understand where you're coming from; I have far more vintage than modern Sheaffers. Nonetheless, the nibs on Sheaffer pens made in the 1980-90s are very good IMHO, especially the factory stubs.

Price wise the 300 is hard to go past but the Valor has a good reputation. If money isn't a consideration I'd lean to the Valor.
