View Full Version : Pilot Fermo not always retracting the older nib unit.

I picked up a Pilot Fermo which came with a 18K Fine, seems to be from around 2012 or so based on the date code of that nib.

But the main reason I picked it up was to use it with the 14K Namiki 0.5 Stub (Dan Smith Grind off a Medium) that I had spare which was originally with a black carbonesque VP, the date code on that nib unit puts it at 2004.

The issue is, with that nib unit, it'll extend on a twist, but it won't always retract when untwisting it, as if it's slightly too snug and needs to be unscrewed and pulled out.

The fine unit seems good with the extract/retract each time, just not the older unit I want to use.

Thought the Fermo was designed to be able to take the capless/vp and decimo units? (or least that all three were capable of it now days).

If I remember correctly, the little nub on some of the nib units was a bit larger than others. When it happened on one of my pen/unit combinations, (I think it was also a Fermo) I put the nib unit in a lathe and radiused the nub which solved the problem. You can carefully file/sand the nub a bit and it will work in all bodys.

Seems the nub/notch on my 2004 one was thicker/taller than the newer nib unit, I sanded that down a little bit, then tested and saw where it was rubbing/grinding along the top of that notch during extending/retracting which was making it stick. So I sanded the height down further to match that of the newer nib unit and now it seems fine and of identical extend/retract feel as the one it came with (as before there was some resistance like it was 'squeezing out') .

The only other difference between the two was the older 2004 one had sharper corners on the square, and the newer one rounded, but otherwise the same in size and placement.

Yep figured that out 30 mins before you posted, except mine wasn't nearly as different as shown there (though they're comparing the thinner decimo).

But taking down the notch on the older done did correct the "problem".
