I recently bought a Pilot VP. The marking on the nib says 612. I think it specifies the Gold quality. Does anyone know for sure what 612 stands for?

Is there a letter before the number? 612 (H612 or T612?) sounds like manufactured date code (June 2012). The letter would signify the factory where it was made; H is Hiratsuka and T is Tokyo.

It's not gold content as that would be 14K585 or 18K750. If it doesn't have 14K585 or 18K750 it's a special alloy nib (steel?) and plated gold.

A 14k medium Pilot nib manufactured in May 2007 in Tokyo would be marked from tip to converter:

PILOT
14K585
<M>

T507
