View Full Version : Some pens that I no longer use

carlc
June 29th, 2015, 05:38 AM
Now pay day has come around I can afford to post these pens and so I am offering the following 6 pens for any member who wishes to have one. These are all pens that don't see any use in my rotation so it would be nice for them to go to someone who would use them. All pens are fully functional and ready to go.

Rules:
1. Post a comment stating which pen you would like.
2. I will then collate the responses into 6 separate number sequences and select a random number from each sequence. That person gets the pen.
3. I will select the numbers at 12MD (BST) on the 6th July and post the 'winners' in this thread. The winners can then send me their names and address by PM.
4. Pens will be posted (without tracking or insurance) with the appropriate customs declaration as soon as I get chance. The customs declaration will be what I would ask for the pen if I sold it and no more or less.
5. I'll post to anywhere.

The pens:
1981219813

1. Wearever Pennant (F nib) with 'c flow feed' and overfeed.
2. Wing Sung 590 (F nib)
3. Sheaffer 444 (F nib) with modern Sheaffer converter.
4. Parker 51 aero. Medium nib. I got this pen relatively cheaply on ebay as there is a slight chip to the hood (by the feed) and a split in the cap. To be honest neither affects the performance (in fact I can only find the split by running my thumbnail around the cap).
5. Goldfink piston filler (can't remember the nib size and it's at home - I'll check later).
6. Eberhard Faber Permapoint (F nib). Lovely pen with a green 'snakeskin' pattern and yellow bands. It just isn't for me.

I only own modern fountain pens right now, but I've heard about how good some of the vintage ones can be. The Parker 51 seems almost legendary, so that was the first thing that caught my attention from your list. (Plus I prefer medium nibs, and the rest listed right now are all fine.) A chance at the Parker 51 would be appreciated. Thanks for the offer!

Thanks for doing this, Carl.
I have half a dozen pens (3 Konrads, 1 Esterbrook, and 2 vintage German student pens from Lex); more than I'm likely to ever need or use. Having said that, I'd like to enter this--not for myself, but to snag up one as a reward for one of my "A" students (as yet TBD) this upcoming school year. As such, I don't care which one it would be; I'll leave the final decision-making up to you.

I would like you to will the Parker 51 to me. I have quite a few 51's to keep it in good company. The pens will tell you that I take care of them, exercise them and have a nice Parker pen case for them to rest while waiting their turn.

Okay folks, using Random.org the 'winners' are:

Wearever Pennant: ejaycock
Sheaffer: ac12
P51: jadehawk
Goldfink: rdcalhoon
Eberhard Faber: Lady Onagaro

No one put in for the Wing Sung so I put all the remaining names into a new list and if Bold2013 wants it then it is his.

dreck: I put you in for the c/c fillers but you didn't win. However I applaud your motives and I've found another pen for your student.

If everyone named in this post would now PM me with their address I will post the pens when I get chance (likely to be a few days).

Quick update: Apologies for the delay. I looked in the cupboard and found I didn't have enough padded envelopes or customs stickers. That's now resolved. Everything is packed and will be posted on Tuesday.

Please excuse the lack of any letter/note with the pens. The last time I posted a pen I was cross examined at the counter and they told me that if there was a letter with the pen they would have to charge me letter rates (rather than parcel rates). How true that is I don't know but I'm not going to risk it (and I'm no good at poker so bluffing isn't an option).

Ah, yes. Bureaucracy is bureaucracy the world over. I went through something similar when trying to ship a large-ish book. The postal drone had considerable difficulty deciding whether I could send it book rate or if it counted as a parcel.
I'll be thrilled with whatever I get for my students whenever it arrives.

I received my Goldfink today. I inked it up with Rohrer & Klingner Sepia.
Here I am using it in my distillation logbook, a Black n Red casebound.

Sure makes log records more interesting to view.

Still no show on pen. :-(

When I sent Mike his samples for the PIF, they disappeared completely. And a pair of running shorts I ordered shows that they arrived in Lafayette, but when they were transferred from UPS to the post office for delivery, they disappeared. I am hoping the pen hasn't gone the same way. It's very strange. Maybe it's alligators.

At this rate I'm assuming it will either come back to me or disappear into the the vastness of the USPS system.

If you look under "thread tools" you can mark PIF's as sold locking the thread. Might be worth doing considering the amount of confusion.
