View Full Version : Wishing to correctly Identify my newest Montblanc 221?

The only Montblanc I have other than this one is a 225 Piston from the 70s ( http://pens.kbeezie.com/post/montblanc-225/ )

This newest one has nearly the same kind of nib style, but it's feed is exposed (as opposed to encased like my 225), the ends are flat (like my 225), it's a cartridge/converter with a nearly identical connector to the back of the feed as the 225, but easier to disassemble by hand since once I unscrew the clear part with the ink window and clutch ring I can just slide the nib and feed out the back of the section.

I'm guessing the nib is from the 70s since it simply says "585" as opposed to having the Montblanc logo like some of the newer ones.

So my best guess is 221, since I initially incorrectly identified it as a 220P (which would be matted/brushed).

Accurate identification would be appreciated. The modern equivalent seems to be the Generation (which is similar except the ends are rounded, the nib housing is more curved, as well as a couple others small differences).

The "P" was for cartridge pens so just 221 is correct. After the three digit series it was called first "Classic" and the "Generation". The earlier models were the two digit models where the second digit corresponded to the length.

Thanks for the visual comparison, I figured it would be called 221P to be specific on cart/converter (since seems like there may be some piston filler versions of the pen). I noticed with the exception of the 220, the tier starting with 2x appears to have 2-cap bands, but I'm guessing that's just a coincidence.

I got a new pelikan converter (well Schmidt anyways, since it's the same look as the one from Goulet for $5) on the way, the Montblanc converter I have with it works already but not sure if greased gasket on it will last a while longer or not. I already had one of the schmidt converters from goulet, but has a crack in it's nipple, but I was able to see the height of both were nearly identical, and putting into the barrel and screwing it up, then unscrewing it shows that it does keep the converter snug into the pen without falling out, so got a new one on the way :P.

I'm finding it to be quite a lovely nib on it that I didn't even have to touch/fiddle with, and it's at a slightly more sane thickness than the XXF on my 225. Especially with something a little wetter like Tsuki-yo, consistent in every direction, glides easily with a light touch and easy to flush out without having to disassemble it (probably on account of the exposed feed). It has yet to dry up on me or fail to start on the very first stroke. (would be awesome if I could find a 221 piston filler and just swap the nib/feed assuming it's assemble the same towards the front)

All of the 2x pens had the two rings with the sole exception being the 220s that used the 3x single cap lip ring.
