For Sale:

Sheaffer Balance Oversize Marine Green

A beautiful condition Sheaffer classic. Cap and body are in very good shape. Slight darkening on barrel; none on cap. Barrel imprint is perfectly crisp; GF band has some brassing; none on clip. Clip is very sturdy. Later model with the better clip IMHO. 14kt Lifetime nib with a .7mm stub-- 6/10 on the flow scale. New sac filled about 6x.

Nice specimen at a good price. 155.00 shipped in the USA.

I prefer not to ship internationally-- if I do you'll have to pay extra and I won't do any returns internationally.

I take Paypal. PM me if you have any questions. A question does not hold the pen. The first "I'll take it" get's it.

Thank you for looking and blessings to all,

Dave

The translucence at the end of the barrel is quite fetching. This clip with the Marine Green celluloid is an interesting combination. I think this would date it to late 1935, the last year of Marine Green and the first year of that clip style.

The translucence at the end of the barrel is quite fetching. This clip with the Marine Green celluloid is an interesting combination. I think this would date it to late 1935, the last year of Marine Green and the first year of that clip style.

Determining "last years" for models and features is tricky business; manufacturers clearly continued to offer items for which there remained a demand beyond their last cataloged or otherwise advertised appearance. Ascertaining the earliest date of appearance from marketing materials is much more reliable; though models/attributes might have appeared somewhat earlier than their first promotion, that interval tended to be measured in months, not years.

In this case, though the so-called "radius" clip first appears in 1935 materials, its appearance is limited to the new First Lady family of pens and to Autograph models. The non-Autograph Lifetime stratum gets the radius clip the following year. Given that we have ample evidence that Sheaffer continued to offer colors well beyond their last cataloged appearance, it is logical to deduce that this pen's cap dates to 1936+. However, the barrel is considerably earlier; its latest date would be the end date of the pinned lever arrangement that it bears, which we believe to be in the fall of 1930, I believe (from memory). I can't tell for sure whether the section is transparent; if it is, that would put the section at 1936+, like the cap.
