View Full Version : How do you carry your everyday pens?

Hey All,

I didn't find a thread like this, so if one exists, please feel free to move this there.

So for those who carry their fountain pens around out and about--commuting to work, to write or draw at the coffee shop or on location, etc.--what do you put your pens in for travel?

I'll happily lead off with my creation. This is modified from a pencil roll idea I saw on Instructables, as a couple of my items are a little wider than a typical colored pencil. Here it is:

http://fpgeeks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=21282&d=1442198329

Usually my Jinhao is where the red mechanical pencil is, but I put it in storage after grinding the 0.3mm Preppy and the 0.5mm Plaisir into left oblique stubs. As you can see, I like having some options. :)

The cord has sliding knots to hold the whole thing closed when it's rolled up, which is nicely flexible for adding extras, like the wedge at the bottom (perfect for keeping your wobbly café table stable).

Would love to see what you use! Thanks in advance,
Jack

Ok, stop the presses: the wedge is BRILLIANT!!!

Now that were done with that, I carry pens in one of two ways: either a Nock Hightower (http://nockco.com/shop/hightower), which may be one of the best values out there (3 pens + one or two small notepads), or if I want to carry more and/or fragile/expensivo pens, I use a case that can carry six pens in a very sturdy manner, made from an eyeglass case (photo album here (http://imgur.com/a/aPv6y#0)).

I carry a pen in my purse every day, clipped inside one of the pockets of the purse.

If I'm taking a better pen, I use one of Michael's cases (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/12660-Everyone-Please-Look-at-This-Great-Pen-Case!).

Check out Nock pen products (http://nockco.com/). They began as a Kickstarter project and have been successful, with a good line of well-made and reasonably priced thingamabobs for carring pens and related writing instruments and supplies. Mine has been the perfect companion and will last me for years and years.

The Lookout is a three pen case. It is a bit too big/bulky to use as a pocket protector.

I use a Nock Sassafras with 6-8 pens in it, all lesser expensive such as Preppy .2, Kaweco Classic, Kakuno....
Love all the Knock items, agree they are value for the money. I store my inked nice pens in 2 on my desk. (Justice 95, Pelikans, Pilot Falcons, etc. )

If you are referring to the hard case I made the interior for, the case came originally with a pair of Serengeti sunglasses. This was at least 15-20 years ago, so I have no idea if they are available, etc. I just offer it up as a template or base idea - a hard exterior that you can make a slotted interior - and then you can source something similar for your own project.

I use a couple of Nomadic pouches I got from Jet Pens. They are a ripstop nylon type of fabric and do a good job with minimal space. I also have a Fountain Pen Revolution leather wrap with a 'Naugahyde' liner. I like the liner because it is cloth backed so there is no worry about tanning chemicals corroding metal on the pens. I put three photos in the following album.

I carry my pens in my shirt pocket or attached to my collar when I wear t-shirts. The disadvantage of the shirt pocket is that, when in a rush, the posted pen goes in my pocket. A sign of being old.... A pocket protector from the old days or a modified eyeglass case that was open topped and had a spring clip would be better. Kind of funky though. MY63, a thought for a future design when you get bored.

The case was formed in cold water and dried out slowly. It was lined in black suede and sewn together with black linen thread.
I did experiment with a two pen version that was shaped to fit around the leg but I can't find it at the moment.
There was another idea to add a card slot to the back of this type of case but I not had the time...yet.

Thought I'd add to the thread...

Depending on how many pens I want to carry and whether or not they are longer pens I use one of two methods.

1.) Spare microfiber glasses bag inside an old glasses hard case. I had my fiance run a couple vertical stitches down the microfiber bag so the pens can't rub and scratch each other. This works for most of my pens and tends to be the option I choose if I'm traveling for work and don't want or need to carry more than a couple pens. My Edison Menlo and Franklin-Christoph Model 2 are too long for the glasses case to snap closed.

It's only next to a 146. So it does appear to be large.

Frankin Christoph Penvelope Six.

I manage to jam in an extra Kaweco AL Sport, a Victorinox Executive and a LED Lenser P2. Sometimes I jam the Clairefontaine notebook in the front too.

Yeah, I'd probably find 12 other things to stick in there if it were me. The Vic and flashlight are great choices, and I can see wanting the Kaweco, depending on the situation. Options are good.

Thanks for joining in. :)

This is a great topic. Loved seeing everyone's daily carry. I bring pens to work all the time and having this 4-pen case lets me be as discrete/compact as possible.

The fifth pen is usually a "cheap-er" one that I would be comfortable leaving clipped on the loop or placed in my shirt pocket as an on-the-go option.

Nice! And a little more grownup than mine. I've got some catch up work to do. :)

Although not cheap.

This case has been amazing.

Porsche design case.

I really like this. Porsche Design has some really cool ideas. I just wish they didn't cost as much.

Scooby. I'll send you a pm. Due to seperation I'm looking at selling most of my high end pens and therefore won't have use for this.

If I carry a pen it is usually only a Parker Vector or more often even a Caran d'Ache 849, but I did recently acquire a Peli 1075 laptop case which, with the handy pick n pluck foam, was easily repurposed as a very capable pen case.

After secretly mocking others for doing so I ended up buying a Pilot Somès. However I did get mine in Japan at a steep discount. I got the 3 pen flap top one. I have used it every single day since and while I rolled my eyes at everyone who said they were worth the price I'll gladly eat crow on that account. I like mine way more than I anticipated. I also have one of the cheaper Pilot Pensemble zip cases and like that a lot too but the Somès is fantastic. Only beef is that you are not getting 3 large pens in it. You can get one large pen in there or maybe 2 if the third is a snorkel or something but even there none of that M1000 biz. You can't even fit 3 CH912 in there. Not a case for monster pens but a very sweet hunk of leather.

5 inks: green, black, red, blue, purple in a Chan's handmade case. Black and blue for official stuff, everything else for notes and informal stuff.

Sorry to pull an aged post back up from the depths of this thread but if RP is still around it would be great to see a picture of your case...:)

Once upon a time I had noticed a massdrop offering of a FC leather case of two pens, it has served me well and it stylish.

Massdrop has an affordable case at $16 that will hold 4 pens in two different case styles that has another 4 hours left to join:

Absolutely. It's definitely my EDC. If I do any travel, or feel I might run low, I also toss in the DIY Ink Box. With this stuff, it's all I need.

BTW, as far as EDC, I've also recently found my other solution... I sometimes end up with a lot of down time at work, and it's perfect for correspondence, but I was always looking around to throw items into my shoulder bag to get it done. I found two different sizes of the Lihit Lab Teffa Bags (pictured is the smaller, A5 size (http://www.jetpens.com/Lihit-Lab-Teffa-Bag-in-Bag-A5-Orange/pd/7669)) that can carry all my writing needs, even a beater pen if I just want to take that bag.

This is a quick-and-dirty pic of my setup, which includes: Fabriano EcoQua dot-grid pad, PaperForFountainPens.com Tomoe River (paper) pad, grid sheets for stationery, postcards, notecards w/envelopes, Thank You cards w/envelopes, extra ink cartridges and postage, @curnowbooknleather Backpocket Journal, and a pen I won't die if I lose - a Baoer 388 (Parker Sonnet clone) with a custom italic Knox nib.

...what do you put your pens in for travel?
Leather cases made by Pelikan. How many one-, two- and three-pen cases I take along depends on the purpose and length of my trip.

It really depends on how many pens I plan to carry. If I am only carrying 3 then I use my Ducati leather pen case. If I am going to carry more I have a generic leather case that holds 12 in elastic bands and more recently a leather case that holds 13 pens. The 13 pen case is made by Wancher.

The generic zippered 12 pen case is the one on the bottom of the picture:

I have an Elizabeth Newton pen roll that I carry five in. It is easy to drop into whatever bag I am carrying. Everyday I have a Nakaya Dorsal fin and a Newton Orville in ebonite. Sometimes I just carry my Dorsal Fin in a single pen wrap.

In my shirt pocket.

The uniform shirts I wore in the Navy had flap pockets with slots to keep the pens straight up.

Still carry two fountain pens in my shirt pocket. For road trips, I bring a few more in a Nock case that goes in my satchel.
