Thank you! I had to remove the nib and feed from the pen and replace the nib to get this pen to write nicely and consistently. The original feed that came with it is not suitable at all, it leaves a lot of gap between itself and the bottom of the nib, so the pen will run dry of ink after a few strokes.

Well... I haven't tried this technique before-- or many others, for that matter-- and I have drawn regularly in awhile. But this was fun and I learned a few things so I'm eager to try more!

Edit: The paper is actually more white then in the photo

Edit2, 20180726: Realized I saved over my sharing folder on my webserver, so I'm replacing the images here

Thank you. I'm not professional at the moment, however I was about 15-20 years ago and went to artschools before that. But I got kind of burned out in around the year 2000 doing a lot of commission work I didn't enjoy, and switched career to IT. I tried to keep up some creative stuff since then, digital illustration, photography, some occasional painting. But the last few years it has not been that much. Now I want to get back to drawing as a regular habit. The hardest part is time, I got a full time job and a family too, so mostly it's when they have gone to bed I can do some work. Oops, I just wanted to say thanks, this became quite long, haha. I just wanted to express that it means much to get positive feedback when your struggling to get things done, so: Thanks! ;)

Here is my first test of Pelikan Fount India ink. Quick sketch, not very finished, I felt the drawing was not good enough to continue, but at least I got a feel for the ink.

Comparing to Pelikan 4001 black, the Fount India ink flows quite well, make the F-nib feel broader I think. I might go for a larger format paper next time, say A3.

In the image you also see 2/3 of my fountain pens ;) The Lamy Safari with M-nib, TWSBI 580 with F-nib (missing is my Rotring Art pen 2.3 eyedropper). Wish for the future to hold more pens ;)

Last week I went to an estate sale in which the car garage of the house had been converted into a painting studio.

On the wall there are shelves full of Canson products of any sizes and types. I walked out with an armful of sketchpads and sketchbooks, literally at a fraction of their retail prices. Super happy :)

Here's a test on one of the pocketable sketchbooks:

Thanks, I had a hard time with it. She has a right eye (from viewers perspective) that look good in the photo but as soon as I tried getting it on paper it went wrong. This was the third version.

Now I going to take on some more loose drawings, I have some ideas how to use my crosshatching. Warming up for inktober ;)

Well, it‘s not as creative as your sketches. It was rather a test run for this nib I made.

...and this drawing isn't much more creative either but I think that it's funny because I scaled the famous Rhino by AD to Post-it size:

Why these vertical striped vacumatic Parkers are not as popular as their horizontal cousins. Obviously not because they are inferior writers.

One of the questions that I got asked often is this: Which nib size should I use to sketch with fountain pens?

My simple answer is: It's relative to the size of your sketch.

Typically, my sketch is small because I started to do it on a no.12 Rhodia pad. So for those, I find XF or F sized nibs to be the best. But if the pen has an M or B or BBB?

Well, sketch something bigger.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50310023948_4f628e2cfd_c.jpg

The size of the drawing is approximately 7x5 inches.

By the way, the pen, a Sheaffer Imperial Gold-filled 14k with Crosshatch pattern, is my favorite for the week.

On August 4th, tropical storm Isaias passed through here, knocking down many trees and branches, and leaving my town without power for a week.

This tree is in the adjacent town where I take a daily walk. I don't know if it can survive the damage it took, but I'm interested in seeing how it does. You could say that I'm rooting for it.

I recently enlisted the help of an online word generator (many of them out there, just pick one) and get myself a list of random words that I use as a prompt to pick the subject for my sketches.

This sketch of a vintage fire hose nozzle assembly is the result of the prompt "hose". It may look obvious now, but it actually took some thinking to create. :)

Replying to my own post, but what the heck. It's not like this is the busiest thread. And I have a follow up.

Last week, when going for my usual walk, I noticed that this tree now sported a splash of bright orange paint. I guessed that this might be the mark of doom, that it had been singled out for removal. Today that was confirmed. As I passed, a crew from the public works department was cutting it into chunks and feeding them into a wood chipper.

This was doubtless a sensible decision, as the badly wounded tree was near the line suspending a traffic light across the street. Another bad storm, of the kind we'll certainly get again, could have brought it down. Still, I had been curious to see if it could recover, and would have liked to see it get the chance.

But it has occurred to me that one of the points of drawing is not merely to depict something, but to make oneself observe it. My attempt at sketching may not have been all that successful, but it made me think about, and look more closely at, something which I might otherwise just have taken for granted.

And which is now gone.

Finally, Will learns how to sketch his username :)

Ever wonder why I chose "penwash" as my username?

Because, although I know how to sketch with a fountain pen, I always become overwhelmed when I try to combine it with my favorite paint media, watercolors. So I chose penwash because I aspire to be able to do it well someday.

And a few years later, I think I finally found a process that would work for me:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50733563716_d163d1f934_c.jpg

The steps are:

1. Pick up my watercolor set.
2. Put it away.
3. Pick up a fountain pen ink (Vinta Armada in this case).
4. Pick up any clean plastic lid (could have used my watercolor palette, but I want to emphasize the simplicity here).
5. Put a few drops of said ink.
6. Dilute each drop with varying amount of water to create different shades (tiny amounts).
7. Pick up the vintage pen of choice (most of my fountain pens are old, YMMV).
8. Sketch as usual, sans the hatching.
9. Start having fun with my waterbrush.
10. Done.

This setup is a lot simpler for my brain, which apparently can't handle having to choose from a subset of 12 color tubes.

And most importantly, I now can truly live up to my username. Ha!

As of late last year, I started, and continue to use a generated words-list as prompts to help me with sketching subjects. This one is for the word "cast".

What is vintage and has to do with "cast"? How about this iron-cast ... uh, iron?

These coal powered irons were the pressing matter when it comes to dapper-ness back in its day, which is not too far from when the first of the fountain pens started to be mass-produced.

Some of them actually were made quite ornately. Just don't mind the little fish, he's just letting off some steam.

That notebook is 5-3/4 x 4 inches.

I gravitate towards sketches that size because I can finish it in one sitting (also probably fits my scatter-brain). Which in turn gave me an opportunity to do version 2 (or sometimes 3) if I don't like how the first one turned out.

This is such a gorgeous pen.
Sheaffer's "Fat" touchdowns are deeply underrated (I'm ok with that, it keeps them semi-affordable)
And this Umber colour is so nice.
I have a 3 pc set (pencil, ballpoint (stratowriter) and fountain pen) in Valiant trim.
The cap on the ballpoint is a replacement from an older Umber Sheaffer pen.
This was my first Fat touchdown. I got it about a year ago, now I have 3 (with a nib and cap for a 4th, waiting on a barrel)
Your sketches remind me of how Acoustic Pens used to write with the pen.
His Business Penmanship/Palmer was the model I aspire to.
(I have a LOOOOOONG way to go, i guess it gives me something to strive for)
In both your cases, the pens and photography sell themselves, then sketch/writing sample are just icing on the cake.

After researching numerous ways in which I can relay my experiences on sketching with fountain pens, I finally decided that an e-book would probably make the most sense.

An e-book can contain the concepts and ideas that I want to capture, at the same time, unlike physical books, it's a lot easier to update add new contents.

Here's what a typical page looks like:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51279173458_9cb3deedfe_c.jpg

The e-book is now in draft mode, with me still adding some contents that I think is useful. It's about 125 pages at the moment.

Now, let me clarify one thing. This is not a book where I teach how to sketch like I'm some kind of guru.
There are tons of true artists out there that are far more qualified to teach how to sketch than I am.

This book's goal is a lot simpler.

Do you like your fountain pens, inks, and paper?
Do you want to use them more often?
Then sketching, the way I discovered, is a simple, fun and addictive way to answer those two questions.
That's about it.

Looking good! If you mix dry-er inks, probably the ink flow would suit your preference more.

But I can't see any feathering, so either the paper is super coated, or the wetness is not terrible.

Christof, I'm sort of a "picker" when it comes to old fountain pens. A "picker" is someone who is not afraid to get their hands dirty in search of "who knows?" in a pile of who knows what :)

Point in case, I just spent a few hours last night getting 2 gold nibs off of some old pens (without destroying them), and then proceed to be unhappy with the way the nib writes and tune and grind the nib. My wife just shook her head seeing me trying to get old inks off my hands at the end.

I mean, which normal person does that?

Today's sketch is a neat vehicle, I say vehicle because it's not classified as a car, nor it is a motorcycle. The closest general description is an Auto-Rickshaw which means something to carry one or two passengers, but powered by an engine.

These auto-rickshaws are super common in Asian countries, especially South and South East Asia. The primary makers are automobile companies from India. And I knew for a fact that these little workhorses were already roaming the crowded streets in Asia, transporting people and their goods back and forth since at least the 1970s.

I hope Will forgives me for this. I've cried on his shoulder often enough about my complete lack of artistic ability in the visual medium, but I now have two "sketches" that mean the world to me.

I love the mix of communities in my life, and a recent/virtual/remote pen friend is artist Jeffrey Beauchamp. We've not met, only dialogued online. I happened to see him do a sketch of a sweet kitty, and asked if he would consider the same for our late beloved Cricket. I sent him 2 photos, one at about 10 weeks and later in life, letting him pick the better shot. He surprised me by doing both.

I did this without my spouse knowing, and managed to do a passable mat job, and then presented them to her. We are so over the moon with joy at seeing him captured this way. I can't thank Jeff enough for this gift beyond measure.

To me and others, we see a well-rendered cat drawing, but to you and your wife, it is a remembrance of a dear companion.

If this doesn't affirm the point that I've discovered myself, that sketches (just a bunch of lines drawn on paper) have a way to endear themselves into our hearts and stay there, I don't know what else will.

I have very few sketches which, strictly speaking, belong to this thread rather than others. I've been doing some drawing in ink, but rarely with fountain pens. This one used a Platinum desk pen with a blue-black cartridge. Very cheap pen, but the extra fine nib is good for drawing, I think. No doubt it would have been a good idea to put down some light pencil guidelines first, as I know things came out uneven.

The main point of this was actually to try out some hatching and cross-hatching, but of course, I needed some sort of subject. I've been amazed by the regularity of some of the hatching and stippling I've seen, in cases where there was no possibility of computer assistance, I mean. I don't have that much control, or perhaps just not that much patience.

Let's talk a bit about inspiration. I recently bought a book called "Art of Fallout 4" which is a behemoth of a book, containing 380+ pages of full color artworks which chronicles the artistic concepts and sketches that went into the production of the popular PC Game. It is so satisfying to flip through the pages.

Why is this such an inspiration for me? Because the whole Fallout "universe" is modeled after styling cues between the 1920s and 1950s Americana which almost exactly matches the favorite theme of my sketches.

Here's an example:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51975537959_8da37c88ec_c.jpg

PS: Yes, even those of you who are not familiar with the universe would spot that I missed a letter in the sketch. I apologize if that bugs you :)

Sorry, I should have mentioned it. It's the last version of the Parker 50 "Falcon" released in early 1980s.

@penwash, I love how the tugboat seems to be one with the choppy sea. It is incredible how you can capture movement and nostalgia in a tiny little sketch....

Are you hinting that I need to work on the size of my sketches? :D

Just kidding of course, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I truly do.
Will, the sizes of your sketches are perfect. No additional working on them is required. :) Small can be beautiful. :)

Thank you, Chrissy!! :)

Interestingly, I never consciously think about the size of my sketches. Once I had an idea, I just start from one spot and continue until I'm done with the outline. Looking back, most of my sketches will fit into a postcard, some with a lot of room left for whitespace <-- which I happen to like, I don't like "cramped" sketches that butts into the edge of the paper.

But yeah, I've seen some larger sketches that fills an 8x10 inches space and no, I don't feel the need to match those. :)

Also, the writing size of the nib kinda affects the size of my sketches. For example:

That's my stub BB on the 146, that one sketch is bigger than a postcard.

I love vintage German nibs with that sharp italic character, these allow me to sketch smaller even though they are certainly capable of making wide lines. For example:

Having said all this, I'd love to hear yours (and others') thinking process behind your sketches.

@penwash, I love also "miniatures". I find them much more satisfying. A big "canvas" is too much for me and my limited skills. A tiny sketch, drawn in the spur of the moment, besides some ideas in a notebook is more than enough and satisfying :)

I also like small sketches. From Postcard size down to post-it size. It's a matter of time. Larger sketches takes mor time and since I am no artist and my work will never be exhibited, size doesn't matter (I don't eve keep my sketches...)

Christof, you may not think yourself as an artist, but I suspect there are many artists who woud love to have your mindset and skills in executing cool *and* clever sketches. :)

How about a cola-dispenser machine that survived an apocalypse?

The handsome German piston filler is the Osmia Supra with a very cool chasing pattern. The nib is a 14ct BB stub which is so nice.

Thanks Cyril.
A good BB stub is certainly capable of producing fine lines if we keep the nib horizontally-parallel with the direction of the lines.
As a bonus, when I need a thicker line, all I need to do is to angle the nib.
Though it does impart a certain look (at least with my sketches) that is different than the ones where I use Fine/pointy nibs.

And I usually find good BB stub/italic nibs on German piston fillers such as this Osmia.

This is a photo that someone sent me upon receiving one of my postcards. It's so cool to see my sketch bearing those postage marks and the creases at the edges :D

I almost post this on the Inktober thread because, y'know... the crab has wandered. :p

Don't feel like doing the prompt today, so instead, here's a quick sketch on a "naturally aged" paper that my wife and I found at an estate sale.

NOTE: The white paper background is there only so I can calibrate the white balance.
