Thank you! Glad you like em. The yellow pen is a Pelikan demonstrator with a custom-ground M400 nib, it is a needlepoint nib with a line weight of about .1 mm. The other pen is one of my vintage Montblanc 136s. It has one of the nicest nibs ever! A rare palladium nib in extra fine with tons of flex to it. It also retains all of its original gold "plating." I have seen a lot of the palladium nibs missing the gold masking, which was created by heating the nib to turn the palladium a gold tone. Lately these two pens have become my go-to pens for drawing. I also frequently use a Pelikan 400NN and M805 demo.

I draw zentangles. Lately I've been using Spirograph with fountain pens. It's a bit of trial and error. But with all the ink colors the designs can pop.

Who would have thought that the old Estie is such a nice pen to sketch with.
The 9556 Firm Fine nib is a nail, but what a charming nail it is.

I'm also happy with the dark-chocolate color of the ink mix (my first, yay!).

Yes - I did the sketch with the Custom 92 fountain pen then colour washes with diluted Kiri-Same and Obsidian Brown, applied using a refillable water brush.

Roberson's inks are unusual. Sometimes you read that they are for dip pens and calligraphy, but they are water soluble and lots of people use them in FPs. I've used them many times with no problems whatsoever. They are very "light" inks, generally unsaturated, available in traditional colours, and are quite low cost too. Great for sketching and washes.

Yes. Kiwa-guro is a nano-particle carbon (pigment) ink so is waterproof when dry. It dries fast. Even so I kept the washes quick & light.

I love old cities, and since I read one of the "Inspector Yashim" novels by Jason Goodwin, I am fascinated by Constantinople or today's Istanbul.

This week's sketch is inspired by the view from the Bosphorus strait towards the ancient city.
The pen is one of my newest one, a copper Estie J, love that color!
The ink, what else is more appropriate... Diamine Ancient Copper.

I wanted to replace the ink in my manga pen with the closest match. It had some of the original black manga ink, but I diluted it with Noodler's Navaho Turquoise. It was the most difficult ink to clean out of a pen ever, but I think in the end I went ahead and mixed Navaho Turquoise with some sorta black. Maybe Perle Noire.

Ok, first quick scrappy scribbly sketch of the year, but proof that I am finally starting to draw again. Strathmore smooth bristol paper, Sailor Jentle Doyou in a Conid Bulkfiller with Ahab nib, a touch of Quink in a MB146. An experiment in smudging ink, and the beginnings of an idea of mangy bird wings that look like winter branches with no leaves. One of my default subjects is slightly grumpy trees, probably thinking, "You killed a tree for THIS?". Anyway, its a start!

Thanks! Just paper towels. Sometimes a messy hand. Cottons balls might be a good idea.
I've had good luck with saturated colored inks like PR chocolate. Inks that take a while to dry are nice enough to wait for you to put down the pen and pick up the cloth before they dry. And the more satuarted ones tend to spread more like a color than a smear. Fun to play with that.

I love two things:

1. The expressions (or is it a non-expression) accomplished with such minimal number of strokes
2. The background. I love hatching technique (I can't do a decent job of it, but... i love it) that conveys the sense of dimension or space

This time we travel to Africa. The Sudd Marshland is a vast wetland in South Sudan. Having the Nile as the source, people there live in a network of village "islands" surrounded by narrow water passages between papyrus and hyacinth growth.

At the risk of over saturation, here are four more quick sketches. These were all done on watercolor paper with one of my favorite inks of all time, the elusive Sailor Jentle Rikyu Cha (elusive because it is no longer available, and because it is often not clear what color and shade of green or brown it actually is). You probably won't be able to see that much for two reasons: 1. Fine needle and light touch, and 2. Lousy photography on my part. Thanks for looking.

Yep, more tree people. Since I can remember, I have always seen faces in trees, and it is an easy way to get the pen moving.

These home made Black Elder stick pens are really great.
Initially a FPN user showed some reed pens he made for his kids.
As I don´t have reed (or bamboo) here I've choosen Black Elder stick as replacement.

My son and I love them.
We gave them all a left oblique cut, they also seem to be quite durable, we used them already extensive and they show no sign of degradation yet.
Btw. you can also make really good durable whistles from Black Elder.

I don't mind. It's still a sketch made with ink.
Where I draw the line would be pencil sketches.

Not because I want to be a snob about it, but I believe pencil sketching is a different art-form than sketching/drawing with ink.

Drawing with pen & ink certainly is different from pencil; each medium has it's own quirks.

I've mostly used pencil and charcoal (in school) but recently started using pen and ink. Like Pira, I prefer to use washes, and I will use fountain pen, drawing and acrylic inks on a single piece.

Funny that you would refer to bolting of a horse and stable door. I had just explained using similar terms to a friend. My drawing, which was 'on theme' in a thread I started, was wagging a finger, but unless you saw the earlier posts come and go you would not has thought much about it nor understood the veiled commentary. The mod must have seen it for the critique of their actions that it was, and bam it was gone. I swore that if it did get pulled I'd walk and I frankly don't care what they decide. They showed their colours....and made a single mistake of targeting artistic types. We don't react to censorship very well (there is a loooong history to back that up).

Anyway...enough about there and let's get on with here. Please accept my cheery spring daffodils, drawn with calligraphy and document inks, as a token of gratitude for a warm welcome extended to all who endevour to create.

I live slightly west of Toronto and am quite done with winter, thank-you very much. However Mother Nature is a bit drunk at the moment and can't decide if she is coming or going. We got snow dumped on us again last week...and then it has mostly melted, although it's COLD gosh darn it!... And apparently something called an Alberta Clipper is going to bring more snow tonight before Spring happens again on Wednesday. I'm getting whiplash from the back and forth on the thermomenter. I have three different weights of coat/hat/mitts and boots in the front hall for my dogwalking and daily shopping. The robins are definately confused. LOL

Clyde started as a small ceramic bear and became an art class project. Clyde made an appearance in 96 small drawings but met an untimely death as he was inadvertently dropped on the studio floor. He may live again in ink samples.

Darkbulb...these sketches are really starting to flow nicely. Have you noticed that the more you observe and draw your collection the better you become at transfering the angles and textures to drawings?

I haven't sketched in a lonnnng time, and yesterday drew a really lame attempt at an ink tree. This is based on the maple next to my driveway, but it has such straight lines I might make up a tree if I ever draw another. ;)

Thank-you. I am an 'illustrator' at heart, and that particular challenge has nothing whatsoever to do with reality as we know it, so I can just happily pull nonsense out of my head. The 'sketch' thread around here is my way of inflicting tedious practice on myself. I am not a natural sketcher. I REBEL against being told what to do...and that's just when I make the list myself!! YET...much to my chagrin, having been cornered into running a weekly 'sketch' challenge, I find myself appreciating the fact that it forces me into observing things and maybe is good for me. The things I set out to 'sketch' are boringly commonplace....that is the point in a multinational forum. Everyone needs to have access to the item in some form to sketch. They are also...not as easy to set down on paper as they seem at first glance,...not if you are actually taking the time to 'sketch' them...which is the point of the exercise.

Bee won't work with washes. I use Stillman&Birn's Zeta for a reason (trial and error baby), BUT even that will buckle so you might consider a block of 140lb cold pressed watercolour paper. It's glued on all sides and shouldn't warp...you just remove the sheet of paper 'after' your work is finished and is dry ;)

Yeah...my trees are not sketches. (Well no duh)...because they serve a few purposes. 1)...mess around with ink. BOY do I like to see how far I can push those inks 'til they break. 2) I needed to get comfortable drawing with permanent black ink...(those trunks). These are a great way for me to loosen up and learn control....so yes, it 's NOT all about the foiliage. 3) I go to a Zen place when drawing them. I find them very calming. 4)I like trees...and the more I draw them, and observe the things in real life, the more I learn about them. It's a rabbit hole I've fallen down and intend to stay in for quite some time. 5) They are fun.

I really like yours. It shows off the colour wonderfully and you have your own distinctive voice. I hope to see more from you!

Oh would you look at THAT! It really does have a green tea sort of feel to it....like dried macha that has spilled on a table cloth. Sailor inks..Kobe or otherwise just make me smile. :) I have not used this colour yet. Hmmm it's a fine green.

Say...a recommendation on the tree drawing if you are going to continue with them ~ I just noticed that you drew a vague outline for where the foiliage would go.....just a heads up that some inks won't allow you to erase those pencil lines and they will sort or stare up at you through the ink OR you end up erasing colour of the ink aswell... so keep that in mind ;)

Thanks, Pira. At one time, for illustrations, I used a non-photo blue pencil. I even got a gel pen in that color.

All of which is absolutely useless in a color scan. ;)

Usually, I don't carry pens like this with me on we trips, but in this case I wanted to test the ability for sketching. Guess I know now why they were called "artist nibs" sometimes.

I was at the huge Half-Priced Bookstore yesterday for a few hours waiting to pick up my daughter from her choral performance (St Matthew's Passion). And I was flipping through a book abut Giambattista Piranesi, an extraordinary artist and designer who was famous for his etchings of ancient architecture of Rome (He is also famous for imaginary landscape drawings <-- sounds like a couple of artists I know).

I only had my TWSBI Mini yesterday in my bag, so I quickly do my sketch inspired by one of Piranesi's. And I realized that I missed sketching with this pen.

I used to sketch with this pen a lot, but lately it has been taking notes in business meetings.

I don’t have a lot of experience with colour. When I started out, I found quite a few helpful channels on YouTube. I think I may have seen a few clips dealing with colour as well. It won’t hurt to do a search over there.

Very nice. Someone once told me in watercolors, those places where colors come together are the most interesting. Cool effect with your inks, too. Nice drawing.
