I got inspired by Peninkcillin's post from last year about refilling cheap Varsity fountain pens (http://peninkcillin.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-refill-your-pilot-varsity.html). That was great info because I have a bunch of them. But they are ugly things. So I did a makeover on one using alcohol inks and a metallic leafing pen. Here's the result:

I blogged about it (http://carolepivarnik.com/ccpart/2012/11/04/varsity-makeover/), if you'd like to read a bit more about this approach. I'm pretty happy with the results and will probably make over all my Varsity pens this way. Because I don't mind using a cheap pen but it doesn't have to be cheap AND ugly!

Very cool! I did a simmilar thing to a space pen once--a chrome model: I took the barrel and the cap and sanded them with 300 grit or something around there. Then I dipped the pen in colored wax, and layered it to create an interesting pattern...oh how I wish I took a picture!
