Some of us post them here on this thread as I have done. Others prefer to have anyone who wants to write to them send a PM request so their address is not so public.

Should we perhaps start a GoogleDoc or something for all the addresses? I imagine the number of letters one receives will be proportional to whether you're an early poster or not otherwise.

Another thought -- I've never done this before. But is the goal that each person gets 29 (yay leap year) people to write to?

If that's the case, we could build a form/ugly website (I'm a baaaad web developer) where people submit their addresses and get assigned 29 random people. Kind of like postcrossing, but not exactly.

gck
January 14th, 2016, 10:21 PM
I participated last year, and I'm doing it again this year! I also mod/run /r/FountainPenPals (https://www.reddit.com/r/FountainPenPals) over on Reddit, and I just opened up the matching for February, if you'd like to get somewhat randomly matched with other fountain pen writers.

Correspondence does not have to be directed to new people. This approach would overload my and I should imagine quite a lot of other people's circuits. A database with addresses is useful and there organisation can happily be left.

There were a few folks who were on the 2015 that confirmed again for 2016... but didn't post their addresses on the forum for this year ... so I omitted their address and changed it to PM, just in case there were changes (or their personal preference for contact had changed).

A few folks from other penpal connection groups have been wondering if it's happening officially. I hope Erik's okay.

It's easy. Talk about what you do or like to do. Talk about the pens and inks you have or like. Talk about one or two books you liked. Follow with best wishes and your signature. You're done! And after you've sent them, you get letters back.

The idea is to write at least one letter a day, each day of February. You can use the addresses on this forum thread and spreadsheet or write anyone else in the world. And reply to the letters you receive in turn. No rules just have fun.

I think I might try to do this. I am very new to FPs and to the FP community but this all seems fascinating. Right now, I don't have any FAN-ceee paper or anything but I might try to go to the stationary store tomorrow (or today if we end up getting out a little early) and get something. Otherwise, there may be some letters written on torn out sheets from a moleskine notebook.

Renard DellaFave

"2nd InCo, electronics and computer geek (mostly mac), into making candles, SciFi audiobooks. Always hoping the next movie will be good & not just pew-pew. Love, and keep inked, a wide spectrum of ink colors (over 40, not much pen hygiene)."

I'll start this month with some replies to a number of last years letters I haven't replied to yet. How time flies (like bananas).

If you want to branch out to non-fountain-pen people, I assume it would be OK to use this site:

Hard to remember when writing a letter than not everyone in the world cares what ink, paper, and pen you're using.

If anyone here wants to write to me, PM me for my address.

Hey, JK Rowling began her Harry Potter series on a napkin. I'm sure no one will mind if the paper isn't fancy! :-) (If you DO decide to write a letter on a napkin, just make sure that it's clean! :-) )

I learned about this on Friday. I did write in pen in my Slingshot calendar book names for the first eight mail days of February, but naturally that changed to: "whoever gave me an international address via postable.com" is first;
then "whoever gave me a domestic address via postable.com" is second (faster delivery times, usually);
then I'll use a handful of addresses from morgaine's GoogleDocs sheet, international or domestic and I'll write back to the people who used that GoogleDocs sheet to get my address, if any.
Then to some recently added entries on InCoWriMo.org, Lettermo.com, people who followed my profile URL to get my address, et cetera.
I'm including my nonparticipating friends who have February birthdays. If there are days left over (hope not), I'll leave it to chance or mail some relatives.
If I am still writing people past February 29 I will feel like I've spent a good weekend in Las Vegas: a jackpot winner with a sore arm.

I still can't edit the google doc. I am going to blame my anti-virus software.
Anyway, here's my relevant info:

Besides long walks on the beach, I enjoy sipping champagne on my yacht.
Ok, I'm just kidding. ;) I couldn't even type that with a straight face.

I am a stay-at-home mom with a 16 year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. I was a high school biology teacher in my former life. Besides my pen obsession, I also love photography, reading, various crafts, hanging out with my husband and cheering our kids on in various sports. We are a mixed family, with 2 cats and a dog.

Also, I get really crazy excited about mail.

Happy #InCoWriMo!

Hello everyone,
I can't let a February go by, without participating. I have added my address for anyone that is interested (take a gander at my profile), but wouldn't feel right sending out new introduction letters. Due to various things over the last year, I haven't been able to make it through my rather substantial backlog.
Anyone who has gotten past a few exchanges from me will know that I don't write short, quick, letters. To keep my numbers up for the month, I will be writing little notes to random, non-pen, people. Fun for me, fun for them, and won't add to my reply pile. I will of course reply to any and all letters sent my way.

A bit of advice from previous years, don't just fill out your list with people at the beginning of the month. Each year, a number of people join towards the end and don't get many intro letters.

I truly hope you all have fun and find new friends that will carry over past the 29th.

I just wanted to put a shout out to all of the members who included a short description of your interests in the incowrimo spreadsheet. For me, I think it is easier as an icebreaker to see these comments ahead of time. It helps me write towards common interests. I've been (for two whole days) writing my letters in the evening, sealing the envelope and stamping, and posting them first thing in the morning the next day. Am I a day behind for not posting until the next day? Do you still feel I'm following the spirit of the month by writing each night? I am more looking for thoughts and how you do it.

For some in the UK, their nearest postbox collection is done first thing in the morning, 9am - well, no chance really writing on the day and getting it posted same day for them? I think the emphasis is on writing rather than posting - incowrimo is every day but post isn't collected every day. As long as the letter doesn't have to wait days and days (without good reason) to get posted after being completed...

Anyway love the idea of the list and love that people put things in the descriptions like someone else said on here it really helps esp at a quick glance.

Writing a letter in the evening seems like a perfect way to wind down. And in posting the next day, it sounds like a new habit is budding. I'd say that is definitely reaching the goal of this project.

I have a "spirit of/letter of" question. I see many of you saying that you post your letter the same day you write it.
The spirit of the InCo rules is that you write at least one piece of handwritten correspondence every day, and then deliver it. The fact that the first step in the delivery may be the day after writing it does not violate that spirit.

I don't think it violates the "letter" of the original InCo guidelines either.

FWIW, I'm not doing InCoWriMo this year, but I am doing LetterMo (unlike the past two years where I did my best to do both). The "spirit" of the LetterMo rules is slightly different; you should put at least one handwritten letter in the post ever day the post is open. You could write six letters on Sunday and mail them one per day during the week and meet the letter and spirit of LetterMo, but I rarely get more than one or two ahead.

As I see it, one important part of the spirit of the guidelines or rules or goals or whatever you want to call them of both versions is to be regular; to do "it" every day (either write something or mail something). Therefore I do my best to comply with that. However, I've had to "make up" for a missed day or two both the previous years if I remember right, and I'm okay with that.

Not everyone who does InCoWriMo agrees with that part (regular/every day instead of "on average" or cumulative totals=29 or whatever) being anywhere near important. Decide what part of the guidelines are important to you, and do your best to follow them; that is the most important part of the spirit of the event. If you think you've done what you set out to do with InCoWriMo/LetterMo I don't see many, or even any, of those participating who is going to say you failed.

When I read of others receiving their first letters this week I feel like I'm a preteen hearing my peers announce their first physical manifestation of puberty. I received my first letters today. Thank you for the lovely treat of ink colors and hand-writing styles!

I hadn't thought to mention what ink or pen I was using and will add that to future letters.
I do appreciate seeing ink colors and knowing which one it is.

I am so behind on my forums that I hadn't seen this thread until just today. This is my second year for doing InCoWriMo. Had a lovely time last year! Anyway, I've added my info to the Google Spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dPyKsz7LuByzCw6E6PTQOoe_MifcRXxFf4ePNOcl1co/edit#gid=0) and also created a Postable account:

I will write back to everyone who sends a letter--doesn't have to be just in February! Also, I am one of the officers of the Lone Star Pen Club (https://www.facebook.com/Lone-Star-Pen-Club-148701603826) so if there are any fellow pen club members here in the forums please be sure to say hi.

Thanks!

First item to come was a postcard from someone I just sent a letter to (in reply to last year's letter). Neat.

Just looked at the lettermo homepage and imagine this sentiment doesn't apply to a lot of us. I guess I started when corresponding internationally with a Peace Corps volunteer. I scan or photocopy pretty much anything I mail. Then, it was so I could re-send if necessary, now it's useful to check a letter or two back to make sure I'm not telling the same story to someone twice. Anyone else scan all their outgoing? I should probably start with the incoming, or just clear some out, as that drawer is getting full.

"It is both lasting and ephemeral.... I will often read the letters that I receive ... Once when I get them and again as I write back... more lasting. It is more ephemeral because I don’t have copies of the letters that I write and I am the only one who has copies of the letters that my correspondents write." -- LetterMo (http://lettermo.com)

Like these (http://the2buds.com/postcard-backings.html)? Neat idea, I guess some photos are too thin to just write on. The Canon dye-sub printer I use has some of the paper pre-printed with the postcard lines.

I did have to look up where to put a return address. My first inclination was to put it just to the left of the stamp, to leave more area for message. I guess, traditionally, cards are sent from places the sender isn't staying at for long, and it appears that a return address is not required (http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/602.htm#xd_602_1_5) for them. Doesn't appear it's required for envelopes, either, but there's no competition for space there.

I am so happy that I joined and started writing letters. My first was to my dad and he was very appreciative of my letter. This weekend he came for a visit and we went to lunch. As a result of the letter, we had the opportunity to talk about his experience with fountain pens and writing in cursive, etc. Turns out, back in his day, in India, they used to use little wood sticks (kind of like toothpicks) that they would soak in the ink bottle and use to write. eventually they upgraded to dip pens when whose became available but that was still inconvenient because they had to carry ink bottles around campus. So as soon as ball points became available, he switched and never looked back.

He also told me that my handwriting is very much like my brother. My brother and I did not grow up together so we did not have the same teachers or same schools. I did not grow up copying his writing. This seems to suggest that some aspect of handwriting is hereditary which I find absolutely fascinating!

...some inks have feathered on the card stock, but I found one that works. I was struggling with *not* using a fountain pen. Must. Follow. Rules. (Even if they are in my head.)

For the Canon dye-sub photo paper I had to venture far from fountain pendom. Nothing less than a Sharpie (not a Sharpie Pen either) seemed solid on what's basically a sheet of plastic. I assume there are some wood fibers involved but it's worse than normal glossy paper. Maybe india ink in a dip pen, or one of those shellac-containing Herbin calligraphy inks I used to have.

For postcard return address placement the official verbiage for return addresses in general is "must be placed in the upper left corner of the address side of the mailpiece or the upper left corner of the addressing area" so you can probably get away with a left-of-stamp return address on a postcard. uspress.com has one example.

http://i.imgur.com/PvGp8cI.gif

For the upper left one rule I probably haven't always followed is to leave at least 1/4" space to the top and left. I usually squeeze it right up to the edge.

Either way, the only thing that I see getting in the way of a couple of things I sent out is the address not being current any more for some of the replies to things I got last March or April. One was a Spanish woman who was temporarily in a hotel in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The other person, surprisingly enough, I was able to find and message on Facebook for an update.

It's not really a database, but there is a page where people can post their addresses. You can also choose people to write to by sending a PM in Facebook.

http://incowrimo.org/2015/01/these-28-people-would-love-to-receive-your-incowrimo-correspondence-2015/

On the right side of that page there are links to other people who have either endorsed InCoWriMo or offered a willingness to receive letters. One of the notable celebrities who have endorsed InCoWriMo is HRM Elizabeth II of England.

If you're OK with people who may not be participating in InCoWriMo specifically, and the "rules" certainly don't require that, here are 3 sources for more people:

Sendsomething (http://www.sendsomething.net)

A World of Snail Mail (http://s-mail.proboards.com) takes a few posts to get cleared to see addresses, but there are lots of people there.

And the old FPN has a long running Penpals (http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/2314-snail-mail-writing-list/page-95) thread.

And as the previous post said, the InCoWriMo site has a lot of stuff from 2015 that may be good this year, plus some people who are posting this month in the comment section.

Many other non blue and other blues inked in other pens, so just looking at some recently acquired blues for a Platinum Chartres 3776 F. Shigure is also a possibility, or Majestic Blue, but everyone seems to be using that.

I had been scanning the spreadsheet looking for anyone who had things in common with me. Then I started feeling guilty because I wasn't being "fair" so now I have a basket filled with numbers and I am honestly randomly drawing names.

I have received four letters so far and sent out21, but many of the 21 are to people I am not necessarily expecting replies from, like elderly relatives. But I am glad for the push to let them know that I am thinking of them.

I'm glad you included the word "oversized" (thus requiring a first class, forever stamp) because the cards are just a hair too big. However, it might be possible, to cut down your postage costs, to use a paper cutter and shave 3/8" off the six-inch size, and 1/2" off the 4 inch size (so it's 4.25" x 6", the largest standard postcard size), and it could go on a 35 center. It wouldn't reduce your writing space by much, probably wouldn't affect the design on the front, and would save money.

In my experience, I have found commercial greeting cards to be a bit cranky in accepting fountain pen ink. Lots of rub-off and smearing, which could be a problem in a postcard. But your idea sounds interesting, though.

Agreed, if there's any slickness they can repel it, and if there isn't they may absorb it like a paper towel. Let me put in a word for the Spritz brand from Target. 25 pack for $6, or last year I found a 50 pack for $10. About 5x7 and they take ink nicely. The Peter Pauper Press ones from B&N also work well, as does their stationery.

As for the blue ink, I went with a 40% solution of Diamine Florida Blue while I decide. Surprisingly dark.

My first year at this and it's loads of fun. I get to play with my pens and inks and papers, with the added bonus of anticipating mail instead of dreading it. Putting my info on the spreadsheet did the trick. I've written a couple of 'fan' letters and don't expect a reply, mailed a few valentines, and the rest (at least one a day) are to those who've written me or I snagged from the spreadsheet. I wrote a nice long letter to a member who was on the list, mailed it and then surprisingly received a letter from her that very afternoon. Serendipity!

There's a $1.30 handling fee, but usps.com (https://store.usps.com/store/browse/category.jsp?categoryId=buy-stamps&categoryNavIds=buy-stamps) has a much wider range of pretty stamps than the post offices I've been to. Here's some international options. (Fixed - apparently 60c stamps are really 49c + 11c for charity).

For domestic, tons of designs, including a new Harry Potter booklet. The 49c forever fern, finally, is now available in strips of 10 instead of the $4900 coil. I'm into neon so I like the current celebrate design. Charlie Brown seems the most InCoWriMo-ish of the offerings:

For domestic, tons of designs, including a new Harry Potter booklet. The 49c forever fern, finally, is now available in strips of 10 instead of the $4900 coil. I'm into neon so I like the current celebrate design. Charlie Brown seems the most InCoWriMo-ish of the offerings:

I pre-ordered some of the "Global: The Moon" forever stamps on Sunday. They are supposed to ship out on Jan 22.

I'm a few days behind - got sidetracked somewhere around last Wednesday (I'll blame it on the snow) - but I'll double up my writing this week to catch up. I told a coworker what I was doing and she squealed "I want some mail! Send me something!". She was so excited! It gave me warm fuzzies to know that you all and others are experiencing the same excitement when checking your mail boxes. :-)

No mail pickup today (President's Day)

#15 in there now, #16 to be written tonight. I forgot about the mail holiday, but just as well since the freezing rain has the mailbox welded shut.

Also if anyone is running out of people to write, you can to to moreloveletters.com and write some encouraging words for the 5 or so people listed on that page. It's a wonderful site. Strangers write letters to people who are going through some tough times and/or extenuating circumstances. All of the letters in this batch need to be postmarked by Feb. 19th. Check it out!

For domestic, tons of designs, including a new Harry Potter booklet.

The semi-postal $0.60 cost stamps are not worth $0.60 in postage; they are sold at extra cost over the current first class rate to raise money for charitable causes. "The price of a semipostal stamp pays for the First-Class™ single-piece postage rate in effect at the time of purchase plus an amount to fund causes that have been determined to be in the national public interest." You need two of them plus one "penguins" stamp to be equivalent to the international rate at this time.

Also, the Potter stamps are from 2013, ie not new, but this should not discourage you from getting them. 20 different stamps in the booklet of 20!

thank you! I don't know why I couldn't internet that day. I was on my phone and I couldn't find it that way. After following your link I went back to the main usps.com website from my PC and was able to find them, FYI to anyone shopping on their phone.

Hey everyone,

So, four letters went out in today's mail. Hoping to get caught up this week and will have to bunch up until I do. :) my pens are getting a workout, as is my sealing wax, not that I'm good at making wax seals. But, it's fun to practice on my victims. Haha.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying warm. :)
