View Full Version : Your Input On Line Variation

I recently got a large Sheaffer nib that turned out to be a B nib, maybe BB, it produces wide and wet lines.
I grind it into a Stub and I try to illustrate the before-and-after with the picture below.

Now, I've been practicing my Stub and CI grind techniques and it's quite a departure from my first time grind using a nail file :)

So, would you all be so kind and tell me what you think of the difference in line variation?
Is it sufficient, not enough, too much? Do you like it? Hate it? Why?

I realize that personal preference will come into play when answering this kind of question, but that's exactly why I ask.

Thank you in advance.

** Yes, please pardon my atrocious handwriting.

It looks like you are getting it. It might be a bit drier now but what would explain that?

I do like broad stubs and italic nibs.

Did you retain the tipping material?

Thanks for the input.
The drier ink flow I think is caused by the tines being closed in a bit by the grinding.
I kinda like the current one, it showcases the color of the ink more faithfully.

Yes, I retain the tipping material.

I do like the line variation. It makes the writing more interesting to look at. But I found that it has a time and place. I don't use my CI nibs often, because the 1.1 width is too wide for me to use daily. The 1.1 needs a lot more space to write than a F or XF nib. A 0.8 or 0.6 might be a better fit for me. But CI nibs get trickier to make, to retain a good difference, the narrower you make them.

I prefer much more line variation, ideally equal to the Franklin-Christoph broad and fine italics that I currently have.

Would you be so kind to post a writing sample here?
Or point me to an existing one with that pen?

Sorry, all I have at the moment and it doesn't really show the thin line. Maybe the southwest to northeast line at the bottom of the B. I'll try to get something up later.

Your after sample has good line variation, but I think that's apparent.

I tried a lot of pens and nibs to get line variation. I stubbed some nibs and made some CI nibs, including a very broad Sheaffer. I got out of that Sheaffer about what you did. After a while I cooled to it and am not so into it. I thought initially that it had an interesting look, but then I realized everybody was doing it, so where's the distinction? I settled back to extra fines and fines.
