Does anyone know of an elegant 3 to 5 pens compact case that is good in terms of design and protection, but is not made on animal skin?

Ok, that's one option. I was looking for something a little more formal at this time. Does anyone know of any other non-leather cases?

Lots. Look at the Taccia (http://nibs.com/taccia-kimono-pen-wraps-and-rolls.htm) line.

What do you mean by "formal"?
I have made a couple pen rolls out of fabric in the Japanese style. Actually, the one pen roll that I created was specifically fashioned after a triangular chopstick roll from Japan that Sammyo had.

I probably should get around to putting the pictures of them up for display!

Well, I have seen some interesting cases from several brands that I like, usually in black leather. But while I appreciate the look of black leather, I am not very fond of animal exploitation for purposes that could be served with alternative materials. So, I wanted to see what else is out there. At this time, I am not into roll style cases. I would prefer something more simple, rigid if possible, black, or other low profile color. Something that I could carry I'm my briefcase and take with me to a business meeting, for instance.

This is a wonderful option. I've seen them in person and the material is outstanding. They have 5 to 10 pen roll. You might think it's expensive but the design in the material is top notch. It will catch people's eye.

Oops didn't read your last people. If you are on Instagram look up Liz_Newton_designs. She's Shawn Newtons wife, thus understands the needs of pen people. She could make you a pen roll in the colors you want. Plus she's got some interesting layouts to pick from.

I too avoid leather products. I luckily won a pay it forward for a fabric pen wrap which holds 4 pens. A few days a go I did order a Lihit Lab Teffa which probably won't be what you are looking for however you could probably fit a pen sleeve or Nock co pen case inside of it and carry other stuff in it too.

Well, I am looking for something smaller that could also fit easily into my pocket or EDC shoulder bag.

Jetpens has some Asian style that might work. Then there is always a tool wrap that can work.

What about this case? http://www.andersonpens.com/Franklin-Christoph-3-Pen-Case-p/fc-3.htm
I think it's only available in the bright blue now. Franklin-Christoph used to have these in some other colors but they are not on their web site now.

Looks OK, but I would prefer something that could be easier or faster to open. Like a magnetic closure, or something like that.

You can check Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/listing/271294588/pen-roll-skeleton-x-camouflage?ref=listing-shop-header-1&ulsfg=true), also. Look for pen wrap, or pen roll. Many do them in fabric, or felt.

I saw this recently and thought of this thread - bungubox has a canvas pen holder available that looks nice. In 2 pen and 5 pen options. No cheap though $90 without shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Bungubox-Yokohama-Canvas-Bag-Original/dp/B01C23C7OO/ref=sr_1_7?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1458172448&sr=1-7&refinements=p_4%3ABungubox

I really like that fabric penvelope by Franklin Christoph! I have the little zipper one in purple, and it's very soft and quite attractive.
