I liked the idea at FPN to collect art in a common thread to create a big virtual gallery to browse through it.

If you also like this idea please post (or repost) your art in this thread.

All kind of art is welcome, it does not matter which materials you use, which pens you use, if you draw, paint, sketch, sculpture, carve, ..... or your art is created traditional or digital.

It also does not matter how skilled you are, if you are satisfied with your artwork and you think you did a good job and you want to show it, then this is the right place.

I´m looking forward to see you your art !!!

Ok, I will start with the results of this afternoon joint drawing session with my 6 years old son.

He decided to draw a crown today and using his colored pencils.
The young artist is really satisfied with his result (as well as his Dad). :)

A 10 minute water colour sketch, with black pigment ink details. I'm trying to loosen up and not get too tight or concerned with being too accurate, so I'm trying the technique of setting a maximum time limit.

This was using a photo reference and yes, the sunset really was that colourful!

Thank-you Migo. To answer your question ....yes...it's what artists do. That is why they have models...even the most famous ones make/made sketches from life (or photographs they had models pose for) and then used those to patchwork their final compostition. It's all about observation...and then I try to get things right with my composition for a drawing. I'm always learning things and hopefully improving in my ability to translate it to paper. It's not like I'm sitting in a medival monestary illuminating manuscripts with pictures of wild beasts, but being forced to draw creatures based on the vague descriptions of ancient travellers. I have the internet and mountains of books, and put them to use. Not as good a use as I should...but I do try.

Love that sunset. Good work. You really captured the awe inspiring glow when nature takes our breath away. I like the reflection on the water. Doing loose sketches is my bane; it's so utterly difficult. People don't realize how much work goes into being able to translate a mood and scene in such a manner that it looks like just a couple of simple lines and utterly effortless. It's not. It has taken time to develop the skill to be able to translate what you see like that to paper. I am very proud of the onion I drew for the weekly sketch because I DID draw that loosely....at least it was for me...a quick sketch/drawing (maybe 20 minutes). Point is...each sketch is a step closer to whatever goal you set yourself. :)

As English is not my first language, the first thing I´m thinking when I hear "Bird of Prey" is something like that:

Yes - I make notecards with my drawings, or I just tuck a quick sketch, doodle or watercolour into my letter. I also have fun decorating my Tomoegawa writing paper. I mean, it's great paper isn't it, but a bit plain by itself? :)

I try to make it relevant to the recipient, if I can. None of my stuff (I wouldn't call it "artwork") is very good, & I used to be self-conscious about sending it, but something personal like that, that took a little time to do, seems always to be greatly appreciated by the recipient.

Yes it's the same paper. Tomoegawa is the company that makes the paper. It holds up to watercolour paints remarkably well given its thinness and light weight. It goes very slightly crinkly when wet but tends to dry smoother.

That's great! :-) Those pastels give a lovely effect. I've not been brave enough to try pastels - I think you need to have a good free & open style of drawing to master them.
Have you ever tried Caran D'Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels? I really really really want some, but they're pretty expensive.

Pterodactylus
May 4th, 2016, 03:47 PM
Thank Migo, you should try them, it's a mess using them but real fun (even for somebody like me who don´t really master them yet).
No I didn't tried the Caran D'Ache yet, unfortunately the good stuff is always expensive-

The folks which master the pastels always fascinate me, it's almost magical what they can create with them.
I bought Staedtler Carbothello Soft Pastel pens some time ago but did not used them much yet.
I really have to practice with pastels.
I like the increadible bright pigments, but unfortunately they are such fragile.
Also I did not found a perfect fixative yet, the fixative always kill (at least partly) the brilliance of the colors.

Ptero ...I come back from visiting my daughter in Ottawa and find that you have installed an entire kennel in this thread :D

Nice parrot too...he's probably in charge of the entire operation!

I counter with one of the images from my Wilted Beauties series of flowers....(I find fading flowers to be very aesthetically fascinating)

Thanks Pira, drawing with kids is fun.
Yeah, I might switch to cats afterwards.

Today I got a homework from my son.
I picked him up from school and he told me that they learned today something about badgers and that there is a related homework.
They have to learn a little badger poem by heart and also should draw one.
The teacher told them that they either can draw one by themselves or if that seems too difficult also the parents could draw it.
Guess which option he had choosen......

So I did a sleeping badger for him this evening. ;)

Heat and humidity have slammed southern Ontario this past week ... so project: Wilted Beauties has been put into high gear, as I scramble to grab various coloured tulips before they shed their petals where they stand. So I've done next to no drawing, rather I am currently playing with fragile flora in my basement. Here's an example....the shade of which I think would make a fabulous ink.

After the tree trunk dried, I dappled ink with a #4 round brush, then dripped/dappled water on that, trying to avoid brushing. For the wet-on-wet, I dappled water first, then dip/dapple the ink. For the areas (and there were some) where the water/ink puddled too much, I picked up some with a piece of bath tissue.

By "dapple", I mean a soft stabbing motion with the brush.

A small(ish) translucent light tent & a pair of 135 watt fluorescent Light bulbs in reflectors .... placed to the left and right of the tent...in this case it's the R bulb that is on.

...I'm horrible at photography let alone explaining it. I have merely 'an eye'...zero ability to maintain the slightest amount of techical info in my head. I've given up worrying about it and am just throwing myself into doing :)

As tulips dry...their colours concentrate in such an amazing way. :)

*nods*...which method do you prefer?

I do a pencil outline of where the tree will be and then do the foiliage first. I don't want to waste time on the trunk (which take the most time) if I don't like the way my ink sample looks. What kind of paper are you using? Have you considered just letting the ink/water dry?...of course this requires heavy stock or you will develop horribl rippling.

Mishele, a very talented and lovely lady on the photography forum I'm allowed to hang out on, has taken some wonderful abstract photos using flowers. This one (https://flic.kr/p/pjaBgD) is the inspiration for the paintings below.

Both are acrylic. In the first I used more or less a traditional technique, if there is such a thing. I still have this one. The second one, which I gave to Mishele, was done as a watercolor using washes and spraying water onto each layer to keep them wet while I worked. I think it is about 4 layers of wash. There are a couple areas of white where I used full strength paint for coverage.

Very nice. You know...I like to go to art galleries (went to one in Pittsburgh over the weekend while there for baseball, as well as attended the Three River Arts Festival) and I'm always bemused by those who murmur that anyone can just slap together an abstract painting. It is NOT as 'easy' as it looks. Just like watercolour isn't. It's supposed to 'look' easy ...but that doesn't mean one just throws paint at a canvas like Pollock (even he had plan). Well done Snowbear :)

Poor kraken - getting boogies on it's tentacle.
This is awesome. Oooo - another theme challenge!

Came across a quote in the twittersphere this morning: "and if you wait until you can draw perfectly you will have to wait until you are dead, because there is always something fresh to learn"....this struck such a deep chord with me as I sipped my morning java. I have wasted so much time in that particular headspace that I could cry...but refuse to look back and dwell on it. Instead I'm just going to shake off the worry I tend to carry around with me like a load stone, move forward, draw and embrace each lesson I learn along the way.

As for the weekly challenge....it's run by @animalalphabets on Twitter. Anyone can join in. Currently it's in round two and the animals are mythical creatures. Next Monday we all post our letter L critter. Join in if you feel the urge....no need to 'catch up'. Just jump in with both feet :D

My current project is a photo (and a sketch of the photo) each day. Just random objects, and makes for an interesting journal to look back on.
I know what you mean about eye-sight, and problems with focus. I need plenty of assistance in that area too! :)

Pira - that is brilliant, but scary! The stuff of my nightmares. I don't like cats at the best of times. I remember watching an old 1930s horror film about a cat that had been taken over by an evil spirit. Urrrgh! Your Nekomata reminds me of that film.....

Migo984 ~ GREAT peir drawing! Perspective is always difficult but I think you really had a good grip on it with this sketch. By the way...super compostion. I like the way the entire image is like an X

...as for my nekomata. Huh...several people have said they were nervous looking at the illustration which perplexedme. My reason of course is that I am very fond of felines (and have lived with them all my life) but also...I find drawing 'scary' images very difficult. That is why so many of my mythical creatures in this weekly alphabet animal challenge turn into jokes instead of 'illustrations' because I just don't have it in me. To actually 'accidentally' draw one that is frightening surprised me, in particular because I was actively avoiding it but at the same time, wanted to give a nod to the mythology. I guess yourself and others who find it disturbing share the feelings of those who would have originated the cat/demon story in the first place. THAT is pretty cool.

Thanks Vera for your kind words :)
But it´s not a matter of talent, everybody can draw,paint,... create art.
It´s only a matter of practice, if somebody is willing to learn and investing time the results will get better and better.
But the most important part is not how "good" you are in the eyes of the others, what really count is to have fun doing it. :)

Sketch of Santorini - from a photograph

I've been trying out a Pentel Pocket Brush pen for the first time. It uses cartridges of quick drying black pigment ink, so lines are immediately permanent. For my first attempt with the Pentel I didn't want to do a pencil sketch first, so I just went for it, putting down ink straight onto the paper. This pen has a very wet, smooth flow & puts down lines from very fine to very broad - it will take a lot of practice to get the hang of it!

Thank you :-) I used Kuretake Zig Clean Color Brush pens for the colour washes. They are water-based, a bit like having liquid watercolour paint in a pen. The brush tips are really great, flexible and capable of filling in small spaces if required. They come in a range of 80 colours. I use them a lot; I used them for my weathered wood panel drawing posted previously.

Thank you, usk15. I appreciate your kind feedback, as the Pentel pigment ink brush pen is very different to my usual fine liners & a bit scary! I'm trying to get away from my very detailed drawings and try some quick sketches, to develop a looser style. I'm finding it hard to put permanent ink down immediately & not do a draft in pencil first.

On the other hand, the Kuretake Zig colour brush pens are very forgiving & a lot of fun

End of the 70s there was a comic TV show I liked always, which tells the story of mankind.
In German it was named "Es war einmal ... der Mensch" originally it was produced in France under "Il était une fois… l’Homme".
I´m not sure how popular and well known it is all over the world, in English it was named "Once Upon a Time ... Man"
At least it was translated in many languages.
I can still recommend it.

However, my son started to watch it now and he really enjoys it.
So I drew Maestro from the series.

This time I tried some new toys.

I´ve used Rohrer & Klingner Ausiehtusche Schwarz the first time and I´m impressed by it´s blackness and it´s waterproofness, it also shows not the slightest tendency to smudge when erasing sketching pencil lines. This is really good stuff, the blackest and best drawing black I´ve ever used.
The difference to the R&K Zeichentusche (Drawing ink) is that it contain Shellack and it can´t be used for that reason in technical pens.

And I´ve used Schmincke Horadam Aquarell Water colours the first time. Finally I´ve bought a set of water colors in pans.
The colors are amazing, the pigment density is really high, I enjoy using them. (they have to be great considering their ridiculous price).

May I suggest something?
You could try to wash the ink, especially the rocks and the sky, to soften how it looks and give it a more organic, natural touch.

I found another great tutorial to draw with kids.
If you have kids and you are searching for a good drawing tutorial I really can recommend this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TUac-CPpWA

Of course we tried to follow the tutorial and draw Totoro.

My son insisted to use his chalk pastels again, even I told him that it will be not easy with the fine details with them.

Additionally he is currently in a phase where he refuse any help or advise I want to give him.
He keep telling me: "It´s my drawing dad, I don´t want you to do a single dot in my picture, and I do it my way"
I guess it´s good that he try to manage it by himself and find his own way...... (But it´s hard for me to shut up and not to give him advise or help)

Space is incredible huge, and we are most likely not alone in this huge cosmos.

I thought about what most likely would happen if two relatively intelligent species would meet (assuming that they are at least somehow like us).......

Ok here is my newest creation.

As above mentioned my son is now a fan of Darkwing Duck.
So I decided to draw his daughter Gosalyn Mallard as Crimson Quackette (in German: Kiki as Scharlachrote Quackine)
This in fact caused much more effort than I expected, many hours flowed into this drawing (almost too much.... ;) )

If you are interested in the making of you can see a speed painting video how I created it here:

I wish I had half the skills of you guys, I went to art school on a saturday morning and did a number of different topics, but in watercolours I always remember just two bits of information, lights colour recede and therefore give depth, dark colours advance and bring the subject forward, the other bit of information was to use a tiny amount of red in a seascape, even if you have to invent it, a number on a sail perhaps. this gives a focal point to the eye and leads you into the picture.

I am sure that this is old hat to you guys but I thought I would chip in!

And this is one of mine.

You remember 'The ant and the Aardvark' ?

Interestingly in the German translation of the show the male Aardvark become a female anteater called 'Die blaue Elise'.

Very nice!

I have a two-for-one: pen & ink and watercolor pencil.

The glass dip pen takes a minute to learn but I really like it.

I really like the use of watercolour pencils in your sketch. They are deceptively difficult to master; I struggle with them. Wonderful movement and the sea is excellent.

I must be doing something wrong because I think they are easier than watercolors. I just lay down a light layer of pencil, then water wash. I do try to let one color dry before the next wash unless I want a lot of blending.

Please post one. There is no shame here.

How about something a little different?

A rubber stamp I made (Noodler's 54th Mass rubbed on with rag):

Something inspired by the stamp:
